He remained unbeaten on 113 as England posted 322 runs after opting to bat first.

England’s main man has finally delivered. Many questioned his ability to play in the shorter formats and Joe Root has responded with a classy knock when his team needed in the most. His 12th ODI ton has propelled the hosts to a formidable total of 322 runs at Lord’s. However, Twitter also showered praise on him for responding under pressure and also congratulated him for reaching the three-figure mark.
He came in to bat at number 3 today after Jonny Bairstow was castled by Kuldeep Yadav, their nemesis on this tour. The fears of yet another collapse started doing rounds after Jason Roy was also sent back by the same bowler. But, England’s Test captain remained calm and concentrated on rotating the strike. he got an able partner in the skipper Eoin Morgan as they stitched a partnership of 103 runs and brought the innings back on track.
Class is permanent
While Morgan played aggressively, the stylish right-hander brought his technique to the fore. He unfurled the delightful cover drive and backfoot punches to leave the opposition baffled. The most satisfying aspect about his knock was the way he approached the spinners. His foot movement was apt and the selection of shots was also perfect which kept the Indians on the tenterhooks throughout the innings.
The hosts lost the wickets in a heap in the middle overs again and at one stage, were left with only playing out their 50 overs. But the 27-year-old never gave up and kept one end going. Eventually, Root brought up his 12th century in the ODIs in the 48th over as the crowd erupted ‘Roooot’.
He remained unbeaten until the end and made sure his team posted a daunting total of 322 runs on the board. David Willey supported him well at the death by scoring 50 off just 31 deliveries. Root scored 113 runs and decorated his innings with 8 classy fours and a solitary. The hard work has finally paid off for England’s best batsman and it remains to be seen if he ends up on the winning side.
Here’s how Twitter hailed him:
Is that enough for England? Great to see @root66 back in the runs! #ENGvIND

Steve Smith must be sick to the stomach watching his peers in Joe Root & Virat Kohli scoring runs while he makes do with club cricket. Another great in Kane Williamson can't wait to get going.

Joe Root draws level with Marcus Trescothick on 12 ODI hundreds – the most for an Englishman.
Tres played his last ODI in September 2006 at the age of 30… #EngvInd

A slow but effective century from Joe Root helped England to cross 300 mark with still two overs to go. #ENGvIND

A true Centurion, worthy of the applause, a stable partner for all who fired and fell with him during this hard earned innings score.

No one has more ODI hundreds for England than Joe Root

And that is Joe Root, masterful, wristy, fighting at times against an Oriental onslaught of spin. He floundered in the first match but not at Lord's. His first 100 of the summer, and boy did he need it. His innings means India now know they have a game #PeterDruryInspired 🎙️

Just 7.33% of Joe Root's shots today have brought a boundary – that's the lowest percentage for any of his last 9 ODI centuries. Busy, intelligent batting from England's Test skipper. #ENGvIND

On the other hand, I am so happy for Joe Root. He wasn't played at 3 against Aussies and that ruined his rygthm. He should play at 3 in all formats for England. #INDvENG
