England have brushed aside the Windies without breaking a sweat in the match 19 of the ongoing World Cup. The Rose Bowl was filled with anticipation of another exhilarating contest between England and the Windies after what had transpired in the islands earlier this year. While there were glimpses of a Gayle storm early, soon it became a one-sided encounter which the hosts dominated and Joe Root was the hero with an all-round effort.
After put in to bat first, Evin Lewis’ poor tournament continued as the left-hander was castled with a brilliant delivery by Chris Woakes on 2. Chris Gayle took his time early and also played some scintillating strokes to wind back the clock. But Liam Plunkett’s pace was too much for the Universe Boss who pulled one straight to the deep square leg fielder Jonny Bairstow. Shai Hope also couldn’t trouble the scorers much but ate up a lot of deliveries to leave his team in trouble at 55/3.
However, Nicholas Pooran and Shimron Hetmyer played sensibly from here on to stitch an 89-run partnership. Both of them played with tremendous composure. But the latter lost his patience at a crucial time in the innings and gifted his wicket away to Joe Root. Root continued his dream spell to pick the Windies skipper Jason Holder as well. This triggered a collapse with even Pooran getting out for a well compiled 63.
Andre Russell looked in T20 mode during his 21-run stay in the middle and was easily priced out by Mark Wood with a short ball burst. From being 144/3, the Windies were bundled out for 212 in the 45th over of the innings as Jofra Archer cleaned up the tail to return with the figures of 3/30.
Root leads the charge with an unbeaten ton
England were never going to be trouble chasing a moderate total of 212 runs. But the injuries to Jason Roy and Eoin Morgan had put them in flux. Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow opened the innings for the hosts and this was the opening for the Windies to make early inroads. However, their short-ball ploy didn’t work against the duo. Both of them batted fluently and were never really in trouble.
They added 95 runs together in less than 15 overs before Bairstow was eventually bounced out by Shannon Gabriel. The England opener yet again missed out on scoring big and got out for 45. But Joe Root continued his strong show with the bat and put an exhibition of his classy shots. Chris Woakes was surprisingly promoted to number three and even he didn’t disappoint.
While Root stayed unbeaten until the end on 100 off just 94 balls, Woakes scored 40 runs after facing 54 balls. England sealed the game in the 34th over itself to add two more points to their kitty. Windies have more questions to answer now after yet another defeat and will have to come back strongly to have any chance of making it to the knockouts.
