More than England vs India it was Kuldeep Yadav vs England batting. The Indian wrist spinner picked six wickets in the first ODI and paralyzed the opposition. They had to tackle him well this time, though there was grass on the Lord’s wicket and Eoin Morgan decided to bat first the challenge was to deal with him better in the head as much as on the field. They did well today and only gave him three wickets and thus managed to get a much better total.

Joe Root, who was under immense pressure heading into the game, had been under the weather especially against Kuldeep. The chinaman dismissed him in the first T20I as well as the first ODI as he failed to read the wrong’un. However, this time Root put up a much better display to score his 12th ODI ton. England once again had a good start as both Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow enjoyed batting against the Indian new-ball bowlers.

The first ten overs were productive for them with regards to the runs. The boundaries were coming at will as the ball did nothing and Roy and Bairstow could play their shots standing where they were. After the completion of the mandatory powerplay skipper, Kohli once again looked at Kuldeep and his strike bowler responded with a wicket in the very first over.

Bairstow batting on 38 got out on the same score once again as he attempted to sweep the second ball form the left-arm wrist spinner. It hit his glove and deflected onto the stumps and one feared England might go down the same lane once again. Kuldeep had Roy caught by Umesh in the 15th over and Root was at the crease with Morgan.

The Test and limited-overs captain then rebuilt the innings their 103-run partnership set the English team up for a big total. Morgan scored fifty valuable runs for the team but got out to the same bowler holing out in the deep. It was the third wicket for India and Kuldeep. Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali were dismissed cheaply and it appeared as if England would end up with an under-par total once again.

But Root who was there and got to his hundred found a striking partner in David Willey. The allrounder hit the Indian pacers with all his muscle and powered to his maiden half century. With Root unbeaten on 113 and Willey run out for 50 on the last ball England concluded with 322/7 in 50 overs.
