Hosts England defeated New Zealand in the second Test match of the series and now have gained an unassailable lead of 2-0 in the series. The Three Lions played some excellent cricket throughout the match and eventually went on to win the second match by five wickets. While many English players stepped up, Jonny Bairstow’s jaw-dropping ton in the fourth innings hurt Kiwis the most.
Speaking of the game, England skipper Ben Stokes won the toss and opted to have a bowl first. However, New Zealand posted a huge score of 553 runs in the first innings, thanks to centuries from Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell. Veteran pacer James Anderson was the pick of bowlers for the home side in the first innings as he picked up three wickets.
In reply, the home side came out strongly with former skipper Joe Root and Ollie Pope scoring hundreds for their side. Skipper Ben Stokes and the wicketkeeper-batter Ben Foakes also played crucial knocks for the Three Lions. Kiwi pacer Trent Boult was the most successful bowler of his side as he took five wickets for the Blackcaps.
England pacers came back strongly in the second innings
With a lead of 14 runs, the visitors started their second innings. Batter Will Young (56), Devon Conway (52), and Daryl Mithcell (62) were some prominent contributors for the Kiwi side as they went on to score 284 runs in their second innings. After Anderson, it was another senior pacer in form of Stuart Broad, who stood up for his team and scalped three wickets for his side.
Chasing 299 for a historic win, the home side did stutter in their chase in the second innings with Joe Root and Zak Crawley did not manage to get going. However, fiery knocks from Alex Lees (44 runs), skipper Stokes (75 runs) and the prominent scorer for the home side, Jonny Bairstow, who slammed 136 off just 72 balls, ensured that England went on to win the match by five wickets and seal the series by 2-0. Boult was yet again impressive for his team as he scalped three wickets for his side.
