It was a horrible day for England at the office on the second day of the first Test against the Windies. They’ve bagged some embarrassing records which surely they wouldn’t be proud of. A total of 18 wickets fell on the day with some enthralling bowling on display. The Windies already have a massive lead of 339 runs in the match and they’ll look to push that forward as much as possible with time not being a constraint.
The Windies first started off the day with an overnight score of 264/8. It was Shimron Hetmyer who did all the scoring for Windies on the day in this innings after the mini-collapse towards the end of day-1. Hetmyer added another 25 runs before he was dismissed for 81 and his team was eventually bundled out for 289 runs. Jimmy Anderson registered his 27th five-wicket haul in the game, equalling England’s record holder Sir Ian Botham.
England register their fourth-lowest score against Windies
When England came out to bat in their first innings, no one ever imagined that they’d get bowled out for 77. The Windies fast bowling quartet was absolutely fired up and gave the English batsmen no chance. Kemar Roach led the attack from the front with an inspiring bowling performance.
He accounted for a five-wicket haul which came in just 11 overs. While Gabriel picked up one wicket, Holder and Joseph gulped two each. 17 runs from Keaton Jennings was the highest score of the innings. Had Sam Curran (14) and Adil Rashid (12) not put up a little fight at the end, England’s condition would’ve been even worse.
The bowlers, though, did a good job in the last session of play when Windies came out to bat the second time. Moeen Ali and Ben Stokes picked up 3 and 2 wickets respectively. The home team finished the day with 127/6. Shane Dowrich (27*) and Jason Holder (7*) are still out there in the middle. The focus would be to take the lead anywhere between 375 and 400 at least. Batting on this track in the fourth innings isn’t going to be easy by any means. Hence, Windies look the favourites at the moment to win the game.
Twitterati couldn’t believe what they were seeing. It was almost like watching a Windies team from the 80s for the fans. They thoroughly enjoyed watching Kemar Roach do the job, with sheer pace and aggression. Also, there were congratulatory messages for James Anderson for the record. The England fans lashed out at the team for such a pathetic show with the bat.
Here is how Twitterati reacted:

Playing 2 two day games to play average bowling you can get away with … But to play quick bowling after a Xmas break is nothing short of giving yourselves no chance at all … #WIvENG

All the talk will be about selection & did England get it wrong .. Fair arguments .. But don’t let it be an excuse for a Batting unit with so much talent being bowled out for 77 .. Simply not good enough for a unit that Bats so deep … #WIvENG

77 – 77 is the second-lowest first innings total England have been bowled out for against the Windies in Test cricket (71 in 1976, Old Trafford). Crushed. #WIvENG pic.twitter.com/wQ3hDaNc8M

There's nothing quite like West Indian quicks running through the opposition – cricket at its most visceral!

How does @ECB_cricket go from good in Sri Lanka to poor in West Indies??? Intelligent lateral movement by Keymar Roach and Jason Holder, absolutely lovely bowling. But the England batting couldn’t handle it, embarrassing.

What a performance lads @windiescricket.

Not many better sights in the world of cricket than West Indian pace bowlers roaring in and blasting out the opposition batting line-up. England 77 all out #WIvENG

Fifty-plus opening stands for the Windies in both innings of this Test match. England lost seven wickets by the time they reached 50 in their first innings. #WIvENG

In the last ten years West Indies have knocked out the opposition for less than 100 in Tests on 4 occasions:
51 – England @ Kingston Feb 2009
81 – Pakistan @ Bridgetown Apr 2017
43 – Bangladesh @ North Sound Jul 2018
77 – England @ Bridgetown Jan 2019#WIvENG— Mohandas Menon (@mohanstatsman) January 24, 2019
