South Africa registered a comprehensive 332-run victory over Bangladesh in the second and final Test match at the St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth on April 11. By the virtue of this win, the Proteas have taken an unassailable 2-0 lead as well. The hosts were in complete control of the proceedings right from day one and did not give Bangladesh any chance of staging a comeback.
While South Africa did suffer a batting collapse in their second innings, they already had a huge first-innings lead of 236 runs which they capitalized on, and by the time they declared after posting 176/6, it just proved to be more than enough for them in the end thereby, setting the visitors a target of 413.
South Africa wrap up the proceedings early on the fourth day
South Africa suffered a blow just before the start of play with Sarel Erwee and Wiaan Mulder testing positive for COVID-19. Khaya Zondo and Glenton Stuurman replaced them as COVID-19 substitutes but the latter wasn’t even required to bowl. Chasing a mammoth target in the final session of the third day, Bangladesh were reduced to 27/3 after veteran opener Tamim Iqbal was dismissed on the final delivery of the day.
When the play resumed on the fourth day, all the visitors could do was show resistance for the next two days without losing too many wickets. Unfortunately for Bangladesh, it was not to be and none of the batters could hang around there for too long.
The Proteas bowlers were spot on right from the word ‘go’ and they unsettled the Bangladesh batters’ rhythm. The Mominul Haque-led side could only manage to add 53 more runs to their overnight score as they were bamboozled on a track that offered too much turn. Keshav Maharaj, who had starred with a brilliant seven-wicket haul in the last game once again came to the fore and registered the same number of scalps to his name even on this occasion.
He rattled Bangladesh with outstanding figures of 7/40. The left-arm spinner was adjudged the Player of the Match as well as the Player of the Series for his consistent performances in the two-match Test series where his incredible spells in the second innings turned out to be match-winning ones.
