Twitter Reactions: Kings XI Punjab secures Glenn Maxwell's services for a whopping amount of Rs 10.75 crore
KXIP and DC were involved in an intense bidding war.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) auction for the 2020 season is currently in process as the capped batsmen and the all-rounders were the first ones to go under the hammer. While the franchises continued to surprise everyone with their strategies, Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell was the one who sparked an immense bidding war between Delhi Capitals (DC) and the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP).
The 31-year-old had kept his base price of Rs 2 crore and as soon as his name was announced, the KXIP bid for him the first and then the Capitals entered the battlefield. While the former team had Rs 42.9 crore in their purse, the Capitals had around Rs 26 crore. Only two teams went for the Aussie and in a whisker, the bids went past the Rs 10 crore mark.
The Punjab franchise was desperate to get him and though the Capitals were going after Glenn Maxwell fiercely, the KXIP kept bidding for him.
KXIP won the battle eventually
When the bid went up to Rs 10.75 crore, the Delhi Capitals opted out of the bidding war and the Kings XI Punjab successfully secured Maxwell’s services. The Australian had pulled himself out of the IPL 2019 edition and had endured a horrendous 2018 season with the then Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals).
However, Maxwell was in the great touch for Australia scoring 177 runs at a strike-rate of 150 and also showed his skills in the home season against Sri Lanka. He had smashed 62 runs off just 28 deliveries with a changed stance in the second match of the series which had propelled the team’s score to 233 in 20 overs. The cricketer had taken an indefinite break from the game then to address his mental health only to make a comeback in club cricket last month.
He is set to lead the Melbourne Stars in the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) as they will get their campaign underway against the Brisbane Heat. The KXIP will now hope that Glenn Maxwell lives up to his reputation and proves himself in the next IPL season. Twitterati was thrilled to witness the intense bidding war between DC and KXIP and were also happy for Maxwell.
