Eighth defeat on the trot for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2022! What a disastrous campaign it has been for the five-time champions. Lucknow Super Giants are the latest to get better of them thanks to a brilliant century from skipper KL Rahul. Chasing 169, the five-time champions never really looked in the hunt and lost the contest by 36 runs. With this defeat, Rohit Sharma’s men are also out of the playoff race.
Earlier in the match, Mumbai Indians won the toss and opted to bowl at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. LSG didn’t get off to the best of starts as Quinton de Kock was dismissed in the fourth over. However, his opening partner KL Rahul was a man on a mission as he stood strong at one end.
Second century of the season for KL Rahul
Following De Kock’s ouster, Rahul joined forces with Manish Pandey and the duo added 58 runs for the second wicket. Momentum shifted when LSG lost three wickets inside 19 runs but skipper Rahul didn’t put his guards down. He shifted gears towards the end and brought up his fourth IPL ton and second of the season. Overall, he scored 103 runs off 62 deliveries as the Super Giants posted 168/6 in their allotted 20 overs.
In reply, MI got off to a safe start with Ishan Kishan and skipper Rohit Sharma adding 49 runs for the opening wicket. While the former looked in full flow and scored a quickfire 39, Kishan’s poor run continued as he took 20 balls to score eight runs. The major issue was none of the two could convert their starts.
In-form batters Dewald Brevis and Suryakumar Yadav also suffered failures on this occasion as LSG tightened their grip over the contest. Youngster Tilak Varma continued to impress as he played some delightful shots towards the end and Kieron Pollard also cleared the ropes on one occasion. However, their efforts could only narrow down the margin of defeat. MI were eventually restricted for 132/8, losing the contest by 36 runs.
Meanwhile, let’s look at how Twitter reacted to LSG’s triumph:
