Team India stunned the fancied English side in the T20I series. Their win in the final T20I of the series at Bristol handed them a series victory with a 2-1 margin. The action moved to Nottingham for the ODI cricket action. Many believe that the hosts will bounce back in the ODIs. Some cricket pundits have also predicted that the English side will win the series.
However, after having a look at the way the action has panned out in the first half of the opening ODI, it is apparent that the Indian team means serious business. Over the last couple of years, team England has made a reputation of posting big totals in ODI cricket. But they were certainly floored by the Indian spinners in Nottingham as failed to get past the 300-run mark.
On a batting belter, the Indian skipper Virat Kohli won the toss and opted to field first. Certainly, he did not hesitate in playing to his strengths on the day. For a brief while, it seemed that the Indian captain might have erred in his call to bowl first. English openers, Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow, added 73 runs for the first wicket in the game. It was just then that the match turned on its head. Kuldeep Yadav was introduced in to the attack.
Kuldeep sent Roy packing in the 11th over of the game. In his very next over, he accounted for the wicket of Joe Root. Four deliveries later, he dismissed Jonny Bairstow too. The other wrist spinner in the lineup, Yuzvendra Chahal, joined the party and sent the English skipper Eoin Morgan packing. Things looked grim for England as they had slipped to 105/4. Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes added 93 runs for the fifth wicket to keep the hosts interested.
Kuldeep came back and accounted for the wicket of Buttler on 53 (51). Soon, he ended Stokes’ painful stay of 103-ball 50 too. The innings could never really take off. Kuldeep scalped 6/25 as England were bundled out for 268 in 49.5 overs. Everyone knew the Indian spinners will have an impact on the series. Well, they did not anticipate it to happen so soon. Unless team India messes up big time with the bat, this should be India’s game.
Here is how the cricket world reacted to the innings:
