West Indies and Bangladesh were involved in a thrilling contest on Friday at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. After a lot of twists and turns, the Caribbean team, led by Kieron Pollard, emerged victorious by three runs. Moreover, they opened their account in the T20 World Cup 2021. As far as the Tigers are concerned, they need a miracle to qualify for the semis of the T20 tournament.
Pooran gives West Indies momentum
After being put in to bat first, West Indies had a tough time as they scored a mere 29 runs in the powerplay. They also lost the wickets of Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis to Mahedi Hasan and Mustafizur Rahman. Mahedi also accounted for the wicket of Shimron Hetmyer. While he bowled well, Mahedi was rusty in the outfield, dropping two catches. The Caribbean team strained a little from there.
Kieron Pollard retired hurt for some reason before Andre Russell got out without facing a ball after being run out at the non-striker’s end. Nicholas Pooran injected momentum into the innings, scoring 40 off 22 with one four and three sixes. Jason Holder, who replaced pacer Obed McCoy in the squad, hit two sixes on his way to a five-ball 15. In the end, West Indies got themselves up to 142 for seven.
West Indies get over the line
The Tigers’ experiment to sent Shakib Al Hasan didn’t work as he got out to Andre Russell in the fifth over. Mohammad Naim hit two fours before Holder pinned him. From there on, Soumya Sarkar and Liton Das, who was demoted to No.3, stitched together a 31-run stand to steady the ship for Bangladesh. Soumya promised with two fours before he became Akeal Hosein’s first victim.
Mushfiqur Rahim couldn’t get going as Ravi Rampaul got rid of him. In the last five overs, the Tigers needed 44 off 30 with skipper Mahmudullah and Liton Das in the middle. Liton looked secured in the middle as he kept the scoreboard ticking. Das perished after scoring 44 with the Tigers needing 13 off one over. Mahmudullah stayed unbeaten on 31 off 24, but couldn’t take his team over the line.
Here’s how the netizens reacted to West Indies’ win

Worst fielding display by two international teams. But Nicholas pooran’s inning was the difference in the end. #BANvWI

What an over Russell! Both teams dropped a lot of catches but at the end, Andre executed his last over well to get Windies a win.

Shakib Al Hasan to Kieron Pollard is the Orton v Edge of the T20 cricket world. They’ve traveled a number of roads around the world, together and against each other & here they are battling it out once more in a #T20WorldCup match #WIvBAN pic.twitter.com/2K42srbbR2

After failing to clear the fence on the full even once in the first 15 overs, #WI ends up with seven sixes in last five overs. #BAN frontloading their pacers against Chase and Pollard meant overs from spinners towards the end for Pooran to feast on which he duly did.#WIvBAN
