Pakistan were always behind the 8-ball in the Day-Night Adelaide Test after David Warner’s triple ton. Coming to the last day, it only seemed to be a matter of time before Australia wrapped things up. In the end, Tim Paine and Co raced to a victory by an innings and 48 runs. Nathan Lyon came to the party and helped the hosts hand Pakistan with a whitewash in the two-match Test series.

Masood and Shafiq fight hard

With a burden of a 248-run trail, Shan Masood (68) and Asad Shafiq (57) started the day. The duo was gradually bringing back normalcy into the Pakistan innings with a stand of 103 runs. Masood made a sedate start, but gained in momentum, hitting eight fours and a six. To the visitors’ dismay, both of them perished in quick succession. To start with, Lyon removed Masood to separate them.

After a few overs, Lyon accounted for Shafiq’s wicket. In the second session, Iftikhar Ahmed (27) and Mohammad Rizwan (45) put up some fight with a stand of 47 runs. However, their joy didn’t last long as Lyon got rid of Iftikhar in the 68th over. Yasir Shah, Pakistan’s centurion from the first innings, couldn’t survive the heat as he fell prey to the guile of Lyon, who got his fourth wicket.

Australia romp to glory

Lyon picked up his five-wicket haul, dismissing Shaheen Shah Afridi. The left-handed batsman went for an agricultural hoick and threw his wicket away. Rizwan, at the other end, wasn’t pleased with Afridi by any stretch of the imagination. Rizwan was unhappy as the dismissal came at the stroke of the day’s last break. In the last session, Australia needed only 15 balls to roll over the lower order.

Josh Hazlewood ripped Rizwan’s poles apart to get the penultimate wicket. Rizwan went for a drive, but got beaten by the in-swinger. The last wicket came in the form of Mohammad Abbas’ run-out in the same over. Pat Cummins’ direct hit brought the curtains down on the match as well as the series. The last dismissal pretty much summed up Pakistan’s journey in their campaign in Australia.
