Team India were in a spot of bother yet again with their top order collapsing for the second game in a row. In the previous ODI, they were bowled over by Akila Dananjaya’s wily skills. This time around, the young spinner was in action again to see India reeling at 61/4. However, it was a certain Rohit Sharma that stood in the way for the hosts in this game.
For his assistance, he had the wise old man of the business, MS Dhoni, at the other end. Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni put on an unbeaten fifth wicket stand to ensure that the men in blue overhauled the target of 217 with 6 wickets in hand. While Dhoni played the supporting role in the run chase, it was Rohit’s magnificent ton that set things up for team India.
Unlike the recent occasions, when Shikhar Dhawan got flying starts to give cushion to Rohit to settle in, team India lost Dhawan cheaply on the day. In the third over of the chase, Rohit lost the support of his in-form partner. He soon saw the big wickets of Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and Kedar Jadhav fall in quick succession. Rohit Sharma did not let that bog down his spirits though.
He took his initial bit of time to settle in and soon started to carve out boundaries at will. He built his innings perfectly to ensure that the Indian team did not face any more hiccups in the chase. The Mumbai lad served the role of the chief architect of the chase in the match that set up India’s series win. Talking about the innings, it was in the 19th over when he reached his fifty with a four off the bowling of Dushmantha Chameera.
This was his second consecutive fifty in the series. Soon, he started to accelerate. He reached his ton without much fuss with a single in the 35th over of the game. A fist pump from him showed how much the ton meant to him. Needless to say, the entire dressing room was all smiles as he brought up his century. Rohit Sharma remained unbeaten on 124 off 145 deliveries with 16 fours and 2 sixes to his name. His partnership with MS Dhoni was worth 157 off 180 deliveries.
Here is how the social media reacted to his magnificent ton:

Can't claim to have watched it but a 100 out of team's 160 has to be a top effort. But must've made batting look effortless. Rohit Sharma. ?
