Twitter Reactions: Marnus Labuschagne's ton tighthens Australia's grip over 2nd Ashes Test

Australia continued to dominate England on Day 2 of the second Ashes Test at the Adelaide Oval. Riding on a staggering century from Marnus Labuschagne and nineties from Steve Smith and David Warner, the hosts declared at 473/9 while batting first at the Adelaide Oval. In response, the Three Lions lost two quick wickets and look in all sorts of trouble ahead of Day 3.

Speaking of how the proceedings panned out, the Aussies resumed at their overnight score of 221/2. The hosts started off the day strongly as Labuschagne advanced to his sixth Test ton and first in Ashes. Although Labuschagne got a lifeline at 102 as Ollie Robinson dismissed him off a ball, the 27-year-old eventually got out after adding one more run to his tally.

Another tough day for England in the office 

Centurion from the last game, Travis Head couldn’t do much and got out for 18. Chris Green didn’t make a significant mark either as the Three Lions seemed to have come back in the reckoning. However, stand-in skipper Steve Smith joined forces with wicketkeeper Alex Carey and the duo continued to torment England bowlers.

Smith even looked all set to get the three-figure mark. However, he fell prey to veteran pacer James Anderson at 93. Carey, meanwhile, notched up his maiden T20I half-century. The salt on England’s wounds was sprinkled by debutant Michael Neser and Mitchell Starc, who played some fine shots batting lower down the order. Riding on their brilliance, the hosts declared at 473/9, inviting England to bat at the fag end of day’s play.

The ploy worked as the brand-new pink cherry was too hot to handle for England openers under floodlights. While Starc dismissed Rory Burns for 4, Haseeb Hameed became Neser’s first victim in the longest format. Notably the day’s play was called off early than the scheduled time due to the fear of thunder and lightning.

Meanwhile, England have to bat out of their skin to make some sort of comeback in the contest. Fortunately for them, the Aussies are without services of Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood. Hence, the remaining England batters must back themselves to make a significant mark.
