Twitter Reactions: Martin Guptill takes a screamer to end Simmons knock
Martin Guptill hung on to one of the best catches one could ever see as the Kiwi timed his jump to perfection to end a fighting knock of Simmons.
In response to Kings XI Punjab’s colossal 230/3, Mumbai Indians came out firing all cylinders. The opening duo of Lendl Simmons and Parthiv Patel was in no mood to mess around as they went on the counterattack to make an early headway in the chase.
Simmons was the aggressor as the West Indian got stuck into Mohit Sharma, taking two sixes off him in the 6th over to end the powerplay on a high. Mumbai had reached 68 without any loss at the end of the fielding restrictions. Axar Patel was summoned by Maxwell to put a cap on the scoring and Simmons was quick to target the left-arm spinner as the 32-year-old struck successive sixes off Axar to take 14 runs from the over.
It was Patel’s turn to take the score ahead and he did it in some style. The southpaw used the angles perfectly to smack three back-to-back boundaries off Mohit, all behind square. In a quest of a possible fourth boundary, Patel perished for the cause for a slap-happy 23-ball 38. Maxwell had brought himself on and Simmons had to attack the part-timer.
In the 10th over, which was Maxwell’s second of the night, Simmons swung hard off a full toss and it appeared that he had cleared Martin Guptill at long-on until the Kiwi took a massive leap to pluck a screamer out of thin air. Simmons walked back in disarray for a well made 59 off 32, he knew that he had picked the wrong guy out in the field.
The significant aspect about Guptill’s catch was the timing of his jump. He wasn’t sure how far ahead he was from the boundary and timed his jump to perfection to take one of the best catches of IPL 2017.
This was also a much-needed break for Kings XI Punjab as Simmons was going great guns.
