Australia had made the finals of the tri-series already while a Kiwi loss would help England get into the finals. New Zealand had one change as spinner Mitchell Santner was out of the side and was replaced by Ben Wheeler. Williamson opted to bat first after winning the toss.

Australia had number 1 ranking in their sight as two wins would put them at the top of the rankings in T20I. However, Kiwi opener Guptill and Colin Munro had their own plans and they were set to destroy the party for the Kangaroos. Guptill started the Kiwi innings with a boundary. It looked as If the right-hander started the innings from where he had left during his game against the English side where he had slammed a half-century.

Munro was acting as a perfect foil as Guptill was on song as he kept pummeling the every Aussie bowler that came his way. Guptill reached his half-century in just 30 balls when he deposited D’arcy Short for a massive six. Munro joined the party when he deposited the same bowler for a six in the same over. Munro took 27 balls for his half-century.

Next over from Andrew Tye saw Munro murdering the bowler with 3 back to back sixes before getting out on the fourth ball. There was no stopping 31-year-old Guptill as he continued the onslaught on the Aussies. He completed his century when he hit 2 back to back sixes off Marcus Stoinis, the first one off no ball while the 2nd became a free hit. His 49-ball ton was his second in his T20 international career.

New Zealand already had 200 on the board. Australians pulled things in the last three overs as they conceded only 28 runs off which 14 came from the last 2 deliveries of the innings and picked up 5 wickets. Australia will have to bat really really well though to chase the massive target of 244.
