Twitter Reactions: Matthew Wade, Australia bowlers crush West Indies in series decider

Mitchell Starc finished as the leading wicket-taker of the series with 11 scalps from three games.

Australia have managed to win the three-match ODI series against the West Indies 2-1. The team, led by Alex Carey beat the Caribbean team by six wickets in the third ODI at the Kensington Oval in Barbados. They lost the second match but showed nerves of steel in the deciding encounter.

Lewis scores fifty, but hosts crumble

After electing to bat first, West Indies hardly got going as they were bowled out for a paltry 152 in 45.1 overs. Evin Lewis was the only positive aspect in the hosts’ shambolic batting performance. The left-hander stayed unbeaten, having scored 55 runs off 66 balls with five fours and three big sixes.

Shai Hope, skipper Kieron Pollard and Darren Bravo got into double digits, but none could convert their starts. For the Aussies, Mitchell Starc was impressive yet again as he picked up three wickets at crunch moments. Josh Hazlewood, Ashton Agar and Adam Zampa picked up two wickets each.

Wade guides Australia home

The Aussies didn’t have a great start either as left-arm spinner Akeal Hosen got rid of both the openers- Josh Philippe and Moises Henriques- in pretty quick succession. Thereafter, a vital 38-run stand between skipper Alex Carey and Mitchell Marsh and resurrected the innings for the visiting team.

Even as Carey scored 35, Marsh contributed 29. From there on, Matthew Wade took the attacking route and took the Aussies over the finishing line with 19.3 overs left. The southpaw stayed not out on 51 off 52 with five fours and two sixes. Agar also contributed with a useful 33-ball 19.

We didn’t bat well: Kieron Pollard

After West Indies’ loss, Kieron Pollard wasn’t a happy man. He lashed out at the batters for their lacklustre show. Carey, the Australian skipper, on the other hand, was over the moon.

“Obviously, we didn’t bat well. Yes, the wicket was a bit tacky but not losing early wickets was the key. Not getting partnerships is what has been haunting us for a while. If we had got a 220 score on that pitch, it could have been different,” Pollard said after the match.

“Personally, and collectively, it’s exciting (to win a series). It’s tough leaving home in a pandemic. The commitment that these guys showed was great to see and getting a result in our favour was great. The T20s didn’t go our way but it’s nice to see some reward for our commitment,” Carey said.
