He has been a relentless run machine in domestic cricket but wasn’t getting that special call for the national side. On Saturday, the right-handed batsman from Karnataka Mayank Agarwal got his maiden India call-up for the upcoming two-Test series against the Windies kicking off on October 4 in Rajkot. The Twitterati was understandably ecstatic over the same as they were backing for his selection for a long time.
Agarwal, a prolific opening batsman since his Under-13 days, has been an attacking batsman. In the 2008-09 season, he slammed 432 runs in just five matches at an average of 54 in the Under-19 Cooch Behar Trophy. He made his first-class debut against Jharkhand in 2013 and after 43 matches, he has scored 3,372 runs at an average of 50-plus with eight centuries and the highest score of 304*.
Agarwal’s run-scoring spree
The 27-year-old batsman’s maiden India call has been a reward for his consistent batting performance over the last one year. Mayank Agarwal amassed 1,160 runs in the 2017-18 season and had made it impossible for the national selectors to ignore him further. In the one-off warm-up game for the Board President’s XI against the visitors in Vadodara on Saturday, too, Agarwal scored 90 off 111 balls (10 boundaries and two sixes) at a strike rate of over 80.
As Agarwal and Prithvi Shaw were picked as openers, KL Rahul remained the sole surviving opening batsman from the England series which India lost 1-4. He too had an ordinary series until the century in the final Test at The Oval which perhaps saved him. Shikhar Dhawan faced the axe despite his rich exploits in Asia Cup recently.
Shaw was included in the squad in place of Murali Vijay, the other Indian opener who had a difficult time in England. The right-arm medium-fast bowler Mohammed Siraj was the other new pick in the Indian squad which is led by Virat Kohli.
Here’s how Twitterati reacted Agarwal’s inclusion in the Test squad:
Congratulations @mayankcricket on making into the Indian Test squad.. your hard work has paid off.. All the very best for the series and make the most of it 👍🏻

Finally Mayank Agarwal gets into the Indian squad for the WI series. Key points: 1.Dhawan/ Vijay dropped,
2.Bhuvi, Ishant, Bumrah rested
3. Now that Saha is injured, Pant is the No. 1 keeper https://t.co/di5ca4EhZz— Aritra Mukherjee (@aritram029) September 29, 2018
Mayank Agarwal finally receives a call-up to the national side for the two-Test series against West Indies. Karun Nair has been omitted from the squad that toured England, while Bhuvneshwar and Bumrah rested, while Ishant and Hardik haven't recovered from injury #India #cricket

Finally Mayank Agarwal got his chance almost after his 18 monthes of excellent cricket. But some people get chances quickly.

Delighted for Mayank Agarwal on his maiden call-up to the Indian Test side. But feel for Karun Nair too at the same time. He has been left out, sadly. #INDvWI

Hope mayank agarwal gets chance before prithvi shaw. Karun Nair dropped after performing badly on bench. https://t.co/XZQEw3EofS
