It took an injury to Prithvi Shaw for Mayank Agarwal to be drafted into India’s Test side during the Australia tour last year. And the Karnataka batsman hasn’t looked back since then. To debut at the MCG in the Boxing Day Test is not an easy task but he grabbed the opportunity with both hands and has now slammed his third Test hundred in only the 8th game of his career.

With the pitch still offering help to the pacers, Mayank Agarwal is the only Indian batsman who has looked comfortable in the middle. Rohit Sharma got out early but he stayed unperturbed on the final session of the opening day of Indore Test. Mayank joined hands with Cheteshwar Pujara to see out the day. The ball moved a lot on the second morning as well but he collected some quick runs to extend the second-wicket partnership.

Pujara couldn’t convert his half-century into a big one and India were dealt with a huge blow as skipper Virat Kohli bagged a second-ball duck. At 119/3, the hosts were still 31 runs away from Bangladesh’s first innings total and the Tigers were putting up an admirable fight.

Mayank Agarwal stamps his authority yet again

However, Mayank Agarwal wasn’t going to get bogged down. He got an able ally in Ajinkya Rahane and after giving due respect to the opposition’s best bowler, Abu Jayed, the Indian opener launched an attack on their spinners. Both Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan were treated harshly by Mayank. Moreover, the use of his feet was exceptional and the shots down the ground were pleasing to the eyes.

The 28-year-old was also assured in his defence and didn’t look flustered even a bit on his way to the third Test ton. After plundering runs against South Africa, and despite all the focus being on the likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Mayank Agarwal is writing his own script during India’s ongoing home season. Moreover, Rahane easing up at the other end has also helped him as the partnership between the two has continued to grow.

Though Mayank’s innings has been extremely fluent, it hasn’t been easy at all in the middle. It will be important for him now to make it big and help India pile on a huge lead in the first innings. The surface has also started offering turn to the spinners now and batting fourth wouldn’t be easy. Even the team management would be hoping that Mayank Agarwal scores big to bat Bangladesh out of the game.
