Mayank Agarwal had to wait quite some in order to break into the Indian team after racking up tons and tons of runs in the domestic circuit. The Karnataka batsman got his first chance against Australia last year in December at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). In that game, the right-hander showed his intent and didn’t disappoint. Ever since, Agarwal has come a long way.
The 28-year-old had a reasonable tour of the West Indies as well. He has now soared above expectations in the ongoing Test match against South Africa in Visakhapatnam. Mayank went on to pile his maiden Test double century, smothering the Proteas bowling attack. After India won the toss and elected to bat first on a good batting strip, Agarwal was a tad cautious to start with.
Mayank Agarwal oozes confidence in Visakhapatnam
By the end of the first day’s play, he was unbeaten on 84 runs and in the first session of Day two, he brought up his maiden Test century off 204 balls. He was involved in a 317-run stand for the opening wicket with Rohit Sharma, who also flourished with 176 runs. After the stupendous partnership, the hosts lost skipper Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara cheaply, but Mayank carried on.
At Lunch, Mayank was unbeaten on 138 and didn’t look in any sort of trouble whatsoever. He played some quality reverse-sweeps off Dane Piedt as well. And not even once, did he seem to mistime any of those strokes. The swashbuckling batter stepped on the gas a wee bit as the visitors’ bowlers kept tiring. His double ton came in the 116th over, bowled by left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj.
The tweaker bowled outside the off-stump and Agarwal drove the leather firmly down the ground to long-off. The fielder there had to cover a lot of ground and that gave Mayank a chance to come back for a couple. It was a good effort from the fieldsman, but it wasn’t enough to stop the batter from achieving the milestone. He got to his double ton off 358 balls. Subsequently, Twitterati praised him.
Here is how Twitter lauded Mayank Agarwal for his masterful knock
A top knock from Mayank Agarwal. Loving the way he's building his innings. Also, Rohit's 176 was entertaining, became the first player to score 4 tons in all three formats! #INDvSA
