After the end of the first innings, England would have been fairly satisfied with the way they came back in the Boxing Day Test. But shoddy batting in the final session pushed them on the backfoot yet another time in the five-match Test series. At the close of play on Day two of the Melbourne Test, the Three Lions are still trailing by 51 runs with six wickets left in their second innings.

Harris puts his head down

Day one belonged to the Aussies as they bowled the Brits out for 150 after which David Warner and Marcus Harris’ 57-run stand took them off to a steady start. James Anderson gave the visitors a moment to rejoice as he got rid of Warner, who made 38 at a strike rate of 90.47. In the second day, England came out firing on all cylinders and made sure Australia didn’t run away with the match.

Prior to the game, head coach Justin Langer backed Harris to come good and the latter didn’t flatter to deceive. The left-hander put his head down and notched a half-century off 130 balls amidst the regular fall of wickets at the other end. The southpaw went on to score 76 with seven fours before Anderson accounted for his wicket. Anderson also racked up a four-wicket haul in 23 overs.

Starc, Boland make hay

Ollie Robinson and Mark Wood picked up two wickets apiece as well. A number of Aussie batters got into double digits, but none could convert. Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins scored 24 and 21 respectively to make sure that the hosts put up a decent lead of 82 runs. The second half of the final session went in Australis’s favour as their bowlers came out all guns blazing with a lot of intent.

Starc wreaked havoc to start with, picking up the wickets of Dawid Malan and Zak Crawley. Malan, who was England’s leading run-scorer in the series prior to the game, couldn’t open his account. Joe Root also faced a vicious hat-trick ball off Starc, but survived. Scott Boland came to the party later as he pinned Haseeb Hameed and Jack Leach in his very first over. England are staring down the barrel.

Here’s how the netizens reacted to the second day’s play at the MCG
