In the first two ODIs, India had tough times and conceded a 2-0 lead to England. However, in the third and final game on Saturday, July 3, the visitors put their best foot forward and won by four wickets with three balls left. The victory at the County Ground, New Road, Worcester, should give India a whole lot of confidence going into the three-match T20I series, which gets underway on July 9.
Collective efforts propel the hosts
India chose to field first after the teams were allotted 47 overs each following a delayed start. The Women in Blue got off to a decent start as Shikha Pandey dismissed Tammy Beaumont for a duck. But the Brits made a recovery through a 67-run stand between Lauren Winfield (36) and Heather Knight (46). Natalie Sciver hit five fours in her 59-ball 46 before Deepti Sharma got rid of her.
Sciver also top-scored for her team in the innings. Amy Jones (17) and Sophia Dunkley (28) had gotten their eyes in before getting out. Kate Cross’s 16-ball 9* at no.11 took the hosts to a respectable score of 219 runs. For India, right-arm off-spinner Deepti, who went wicketless in the first two matches, picked up three wickets. Every other bowler picked up one wicket each.
Mithali stands tall
Shafali Verma (19) and Smriti Mandhana got India off to a reasonable beginning courtesy of a 46-run stand for the opening wicket. Cross separated the duo, getting rid of Verma after which Sophie Ecclestone castled Jemimah Rodrigues. Mandhana also perished for 49 and all of a sudden, the visitors found themselves at 81 for three from 46 for no loss. The required rate was well past five as well.
From there on, Mithali Raj took charge. The veteran notched a hat-trick of half-centuries to make sure that India evade a series defeat. She stayed not out on 75 off 86 with eight fours. Harmanpreet Kaur (16), Deepti (18) and Sneh Rana (24) lent her the apt support. In the third ball of the final over, Raj cut Katherine Brunt for a four past the point region to take her team over the finishing hurdle.
Here’s how the netizens reacted to India’s win:

Harmanpreet Kaur has been sadly off colour for close to four years now. Little of note since *that* 171 in the WC semifinal v Australia in 2017.

What a champion @M_Raj03. Simply the best. So calm, so sure in a run-chase. No big celebration, no theatrics, just a job finished. Superstar of the game.

I cannot accept that we won't have enough girls playing at a certain standard. Look what a player we have rediscovered in Sneh Rana.

Mithali Raj shows that in our excitement over young talent, we shouldn't lose patience with our experienced stars. Encourage youth but don't write off seniors, one of cricket's oldest lessons. @M_Raj03
