England all-rounder Moeen Ali recorded his third century of his ODI career in the third game of the best of 5 match series against the West Indies. Moeen completed his ton in just 53 balls making it the second fastest hundred by an England batsman in ODIs. Jos Butler holds the record for the fastest one, doing it in seven fewer balls against Pakistan in 2015.

Moeen’s innings took the game away from the visiting side. Walking into bat in the 33rd over when the score read 210 for 5, Moeen had a lot of work to do and with limited resources. The hosts had an excellent run rate but were losing wickets and two overs later, when Root was walking back to the pavilion, they were in danger of getting bowled out before the allotted 50 overs. Moeen took center stage and took the attack to the opposition.

The remarkable aspect about Moeen’s innings was his awareness of the situation. The 30-year old took 39 balls to score his first 39 runs before launching an attack on a hapless West Indies attack. He hit 61 runs in the next 14 balls he faced which included 8 gigantic sixes, all of this inside 10 minutes. It took him just 12 balls to go from 50 to 100. His strokeplay was exemplary, timing pristine. He added 117 runs for the 7th wicket with Chris Woakes, who did no any harm to his all-rounder tag by scoring a run-a-ball 34.

Moeen entertained everyone with his audacious strokes and helped England to collect 123 runs in the last 10 overs to finish on 369 for 9 in 50 overs. At one stage, even 300 looked difficult to get but Moeen’s innings left the visitors stunned and numb. They do have the likes of Lewis, Samuels, and Gayle in their batting line-up but the match is already too far away from their grasp.

The 30-year old all-rounder has had a terrific summer both in Test and ODI cricket. The hundred in Bristol is just an icing on the cake and England will hope that he carries this form into the forthcoming Ashes.
