The visiting Pakistan side had a brilliant start to their tour of England. The Pakistani side dictated the terms on the first day of the first Test match of the tour. The visitors are scheduled to play two Tests in the series and the stage was wall set at the iconic Lord’s for the first Test. Coming in to the game, team Pakistan had an inexperienced lineup. At the same time, the English lineup looked quite fragile as well.

On the first day, England won the toss and opted to bat first. They reckoned that the new ball will not do much. Their anticipation proved wrong as the Pakistani bowlers struck early in the game. Mohammad Abbas sent Mark Stoneman packing on 4 in the fourth over of the game. Soon, Hasan Ali struck twice to get the wickets of Joe Root and Dawid Malan.

England needed some rebuild and Alastair Cook and Jonny Bairstow provided that. While Bairstow perished for 27, Cook went on to top score for his side with 70 to his name. The innings also saw a handy contribution of 38 runs from the willow of all-rounder Ben Stokes. At the tea break, things looked balanced and the hosts hoped of a revival.

Much to their disappointment, they lost 5 wickets for just 16 runs after the tea break. England eventually bundled out for 184 in the game. For Pakistan, Mohammad Abbas and Hasan Ali bagged four wickets each. Abbas was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4/23 to his name.

The visitors did not quite get a dream start with the bat though. A very good referral from Stuart Broad saw Imam-ul-Haq get dismissed on 4. After Imam’s dismissal, Pakistan managed to do everything right with the bat. Haris Sohail (21*) and Azhar Ali (18*) showed great composure to stay unbeaten at the crease at the stumps on day 1. Pakistan finished with 50/1 in the 23 overs they played on the day.

Here is how the Twitterati reacted to the day’s play:
