West Indies would have never thought they had any chance in the contest against Pakistan in the first ODI at Guyana. They were pretty much buried with the last nail in the coffin as Shai Hope walked back to the dressing room. The scorecard for the home team read 158 for 4, needing another 151 runs with just over 16 overs left in the game. Little did Pakistan know that Jason Mohammed who was still at the crease, would resurrect his side to clinch a thriller of a game.
Pakistan’s feared pace attack which included the likes of Mohammad Amir, WahabRiaz and Hasan Ali steaming in, were all treated with utter disdain. Mohammed sprung to life, clobbering the opposition bowlers to all parts of the park. With some assistance from an Ashley Nurse cameo, West Indies had chased down their highest successful target of 309 with 6 balls to spare.
Put into bat first, Pakistan started off with a steady opening partnership. Kamran Akmal perished to Holder 3 short of his half century. Ahmed Shehzad, however, went on to cross that landmark, scoring 67 before being bowled by Nurse. Mohammed Hafeez was the pick of the batsman with a 92-ball 88. A quickfire 50 from Shoaib Malik and Sarfraz Ahmed’s cameo lower down the order meant that the visitors ended with 308 on the board.
Ashley Nurse topped the bowling charts for the Windies as he picked up 4 important Pakistan wickets. Although he had nothing to show for in the wickets column, Alzarri Joseph went for just 49 in his quota of 10 overs.
The Windies opening partnership was short-lived as Chadwick Walton fell for just 7. The hosts were always behind the asking rate as they found themselves struggling at 156 for 3 with 32 overs done and dusted. West Indies lost Hope, in every sense of the word, as they required rate kept mounting.
Enter Jason Mohammed, the hero who would star in a record chase for the home team. He brought the West Indies out from the jaws of death with his ferocious hitting. His 91 off 58 balls included 11 boundaries and 3 sixes.
Mohammed, however, lost his partners at the other end at regular intervals, with Jason Holder falling at 259. The Windies still required 50 runs with just over 5 overs to spare. In came Ashley Nurse and swung the long handle to great effect. Striking at 226, Nurse smashed 34 off a mere 15 deliveries and sealed the game for the home team.
Jason Mohammed and Ashley Nurse had scripted an epic victory for the Caribbean boys, a victory that will undoubtedly find a spot in the record books.
Here’s how Twitter reacted to the Windies emphatic win over Pakistan:

Pakistan pay the price for playing selfish cricket. Their batsmen played for their runs, not for the team. They deserved to lose. #WIvPak

That's totally wrong that we lost due to batting. 309 target was enough according to our bowling but poor bowling in last 15 ours #PakvWI
