Former Indian skipper MS Dhoni is once again on a rescue mission after India were restricted to 29/7 by a spirited Sri Lankan attack in Dharamshala, the venue for the 1st ODI between the two sides. The 36-year-old is the only recognized batsman currently at the crease for India. Dhoni whacked four boundaries and ran few singles take India to a decent position.

In the process, the batsman has reached the 16000-run mark in international cricket. Having retired from Test cricket, Dhoni’s stats read 4876 runs from 90 Tests while in ODIs, the run machine has scored 9826 runs from 309 games. Known for his lightning reaction behind the stumps, Dhoni has scored 1281 runs from 83 T20Is.

Cricketing world praise Dhoni

While many have gunned for Dhoni’s head, former Indian cricketer VVS Laxman batted for him recently. Speaking to Agenda AajTaak, Laxman said “I don’t think Kohli is protecting Dhoni. He’s above all that and he has a very important role to play in the 2019 World Cup. Kohli is handling Dhoni very well…much like Sourav handled Sachin when he resigned from captaincy.”

“Kohli is giving the right opportunities to MS Dhoni and he takes help from him. He has no ego and I feel Dhoni will have to play a huge hand,” he added.

Veteran spinner Harbhajan Singh also backed Dhoni but added that he will  have to keep on scoring runs.”World Cup is far off. One year is a lot and in Indian cricket, there are a lot of changes every day. Who will be in form that time? Experience is there but form and everything matters. Dhoni is a big player but World Cup is far off and Dhoni has to keep performing to be a part of the 11,” said Harbhajan.

Clearly, the man makes a lot of news whenever he is scoring or the other way round. This time around, Dhoni has saved the Indian team from an embarrassing feat of getting bowled out below 50. He is currently batting on 32 off 44 balls. Let’s check out how the internet reacted to it.
