Former Indian skipper MS Dhoni was at his robust best at Cuttack, as he plundered the English attack with no mercy. Dhoni who is currently on an offload mode took his time to settle in the middle; with his first boundary coming after facing 25 balls. Dhoni along with Yuvraj Singh sent the bowlers for leather hunt, as the former brought up his tenth One-Day International hundred off 106 balls, along with nine boundaries and three towering sixes.
He walked out to the middle when the team was in a real fix 3 down for just 22. Yuvraj Singh was there in the middle and had already cleared his intentions, Dhoni eventually got into his grooves and then the big shots were coming out quite easily. The first objective for them was to pull things back in hands, once they ensured there was no leakage of wickets they had enough opportunities to score runs.
Dhoni was particularly brutal against England pacer Liam Plunkett, against whom the right-hander went down the wicket to smack a maximum before smoking one to the mid-wicket and sending one more over the extra cover for a six. His entertaining knock was cut short on the very next ball, as he set one up at deep square leg off a full toss delivery.
He perished for 134 off 122 balls, with 10 boundaries and six sixes. This was also Dhoni’s first hundred after stepping down from the limited-overs captaincy earlier this year. India finished their innings at 381/6 in 50 overs, with Yuvraj top scoring with a stylish 150 from 127 balls, along with 21 boundaries and 3 sixes.
Dhoni has now joined former great Sachin Tendulkar in the elite list of batsmen who have scored most ODI runs for India at home. He completed 4000 runs and is currently second placed after the master blaster, who is at the top with 6976 runs.
MS is also the fifth highest run getter in ODI’s for India behind, Tendulkar (18,426 runs), Sourav Ganguly (11,221), Rahul Dravid (10,768) and Mohammad Azharuddin (9378).
Here are some of the best tweets acknowledging his hundred:
