The defending champions Multan Sultans continue to keep their undefeated streak intact with an impressive  42-run win over Peshawar Zalmi in the Match 16 of the Pakistan Super League (2022) on Thursday, February 10. After scoring a total in excess of 180, the Multan bowlers applied breaks on Peshawar’s momentum and chipped in with wickets at regular intervals which hampered their progress in the chase.

By the virtue of this win, the title-holders have won all their six matches and are comfortably placed on top of the PSL 2022 standings with 12 points on their tally whereas, the last edition’s finalists are placed at the fifth spot in the points table having won just two of their sixth games and just have four points in the tally. Their fourth loss this year has put them in a spot of bother as far as their knockouts berth is concerned.

Earlier, after being asked to bat first by Peshawar Zalmi at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, in-form opener Shan Masood and skipper Mohammad Rizwan helped the Multan Sultans in getting off to a good start as the duo added 98 runs for the first wicket before the latter was adjudged lbw to his Peshawar counterpart Wahab Riaz for a run-a-ball 34.  Riaz provided a vital breakthrough for his side just when it appeared that the duo would score at a brisk rate during the slog overs.

Here is how Twitter reacted to Multan Sultan’s winning streak

Meanwhile, Masood was the top-scorer for the Sultans having scored 68 runs off 49 deliveries. Even he was accounted by the veteran left-arm seamer in the 16th over. Knocks of 18-ball 34 by Tim David and 15 runs off seven balls by former Proteas batter Rilee Rossouw propelled Multan to a stiff total of 182/7 from their 20 overs. Wahab Riaz was the pick of the bowlers for Zalmi with figures of 2/34 from his four overs at an economy rate of 8.5 and Salman Irshad also chipped in with two scalps conceding 34 runs from his quota of four overs.

Blessing Muzarabani rattles Peshawar’s famed batting line-up

Chasing 183, Zalmi were on the back foot straight away as openers Kamran Akmal and Haider Ali were dismissed cheaply by Blessing Muzarabani. Liam Livingstone and Hussain Talat too could not last long and Peshawar lost half their side when Sherfane Rutherford was sent back by the Zimbabwean pacer in the 13th over. Veteran Pakistan all-rounder Shoaib Malik then soldiered on for his side scoring a quickfire 44 runs off 31 deliveries and Peshawar Zalmi could heave a sigh of relief until he was out there.

Nonetheless, once he was dismissed in the 15th over, no other batter apart from the Australian all-rounder Ben Cutting could show much of an impact as the last season’s runners-up were bowled out for just 140 with three balls to spare.
