The second Qualifier luckily didn’t see any rain interruption during the match proceedings. However, it did see another low scoring encounter with Kolkata Knight Riders at the receiving end this time. Mumbai Indians managed to win the game and enter their fourth IPL final.

Earlier in the day, it was captain Rohit Sharma who won the toss as Mumbai elected to bowl first. They made one change as Mitchell Johnson replaced Mitchell McClenaghan. For the  Knight Riders, Yusuf Pathan and Trent Boult made way for Ankit Rajpoot and Colin de Grandhomme in the playing XI.

Batting first, it was Chris Lynn and Sunil Narine back at the top for KKR. Jasprit Bumrah got the first breakthrough as Lynn was out early in the second over. He later came back to trap Robin Uthappa in front of the stumps. The Kolkata batting continued to disappoint as Sunil Narine failed to weave his magic again.

Even captain Gautam Gambhir couldn’t bring about a change in their fortunes as the KKR batting faltered badly. Karn Sharma came in to get the better of Gambhir followed by de Grandhomme who was dismissed for a duck. Kolkata were left reeling at 31/5.

Some late charge by Suryakumar Yadav and Ishank Jaggi took them to a total above 100 runs before they were bundled for 107 runs, failing to last even 20 overs. Karn was the pick of the bowlers with 4/16. Bumrah again impressed with some clinical figures of 3/7. Mitchell Johnson got a couple of wickets while Lasith Malinga managed to get the last wicket.

The chase didn’t begin as easy as Mumbai Indians would’ve expected it to. They faced two jolts early in the innings as both Lendl Simmons and Parthiv Patel were dismissed cheaply. At 34/3, with Ambati Rayudu back in the hut, MI did seem in a spot of bother.

Rohit Sharma played a composed innings but failed to finish the game for his team. The star of the day with the bat was Krunal Pandya who managed to score a spectacular 45 (30)* as Mumbai Indians went on to win the game by 6 wickets with more than 5 overs to spare.

Karn was deservingly awarded the Man of the Match. With this win, the final game of the IPL is all set to witness the Maharashtra derby between Mumbai Indians and Rising Pune Supergiant. It promises to be a cracker of a contest.
