In another humdinger of a contest today at the Wankhede, Mumbai Indians emerged victorious against the Delhi Daredevils in what was a low scoring game. This was the sixth consecutive victory for Mumbai Indians in this year’s IPL.
Earlier in the day, it was captain Zaheer Khan who won the toss as Delhi Daredevils elected to field first. While DD made 3 changes as Kagiso Rabada, Aditya Tare and Corey Anderson were brought into the playing XI, the hosts had Mitchell Johnson coming in for Lasith Malinga.
Mumbai Indians began well as Jos Buttler got going soon enough. However, once both partners were back to the pavilion, Mumbai lost a flurry of wickets. The skipper Rohit Sharma and even the consistent Nitish Rana failed to do anything special.
While the lower order comprising of Kieron Pollard, Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya made vital contributions, the DD bowling attack never became complacent as they kept the pressure constant throughout the innings. In the end, Mumbai were restricted to a total of 142/8 in their quota of 20 overs.
Amit Mishra was the pick of the bowlers amongst the Delhi bowlers with figures of 2/19. He also bowled a rare maiden over. Pat Cummins was again fantastic with 2/20 in his quota of four overs. Rabada also managed to get a wicket on his IPL debut.
A target of 143 runs at the Wankhede is what any opposition will fancy chasing. However, the opposition being Delhi Daredevils messed up badly. By the end of the seventh over, Delhi were reduced to a shocking 24/6.
Mumbai Indians produced some clinical performance with the ball. Mitchell McClenaghan struck thrice, while Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya also managed to get a wicket each. At one moment it seemed, Delhi won’t even cross 50 runs.
However, the duo of Chris Morris and Kagiso Rabada showed some great fighting spirit as they stitched a 91 run partnership for the seventh wicket. Delhi Daredevils came really close to victory but some spectacular death bowling by Bumrah and McClenaghan helped Mumbai achieve a 14 run victory.
Here are some of the amazing Twitter reactions that took place during the course of the game:

There is something positive about this defeat, unlike earlier seasons, #Dravid 's team isn't giving us hopes & then messing up in the end.

Mitchell Johnson bats 2 spots below Harbhajan Singh in this T20 side. T20 line ups are not batting line ups.

Rohit Sharma has 49 runs in 5 innings. Maybe the best batsman in the @mipaltan team should bat where he most likes to.

Rohit falls too. Mumbai in tatters. Pollard and Pandya brothers still around. All hope not lost
