The first ball he faced was lucky to survive an unplayable delivery, short of length it moved away the distance between the ball and the bat was just Mushfiqur Rahim’s luck. He walked in when Imruk Kayes got out and the team had 67 runs on the board in the 14th over. The Test skipper has faced a lot of criticism in the past week and had a lot to answer, but more than anything the team needed him here to get to a defendable score.
He got in, rotated the strike and focused on anchoring the innings. Mushfiqur played the shots on the deliveries that deserved to be punished and displayed his class to the Proteas who dominated them completely in the Test series. He had two fifty-plus partnership with Shakib Al Hasan who was promoted to No.3 and Mahmadullah and placed the team on course for a good total.
He wasn’t enjoying a really smooth flow in the middle part of the innings but amidst playing and missing a few, he danced down the track against Dane Patterson and opened his arms to hit a bigge over covers and that six got him to the half century.
Mushfiqur was cheeky, played to the field and accumulated his runs at a decent pace to become the first ever Bangladesh batsman to score a century in international cricket against South Africa and his 5th in ODIs. He got there on the 108th ball of his innings and stayed unbeaten at the end of the innings with 110 from 116 balls.
His knock was graced with 11 boundaries and a couple of sixes. Mushfiqur displayed a lot of determination and the eagerness to make a statement. It was his valiant effort that took the team to 278/7 in their share of 50 overs.
It will now be interesting to see how the Bangladeshi bowlers turn up against the strong batting line-up of the Proteas that is bolstered with the return of the big man AB de Villiers.
Here is how Twitterati reacted to his knock:
