The first Test match between the Windies and New Zealand kicked off at Wellington. In a single day, we saw 12 wickets falling at the Basin Reserve. The Kiwis managed to have an upper hand as they sprung close to the deficit.
Earlier in the day, it was skipper Jason Holder who won the toss as West Indies elected to bat first. The Caribbeans went in with a fast bowling attack. As for the hosts, they had 4 pacers alongside Mitchell Santner.
Batting first, the Windies were off to a good start. Kraigg Brathwaite and Kieran Powell put up a 50 runs partnership for the first wicket. However, the turn that followed was quite unexpected. While Brathwaite got out soon, the West Indies faced an apocalypse after Powell’s wicket.
The duo of Shimron Hetmyer and Shai Hope were dismissed cheaply by Neil Wagner within the space of three balls. Wickets kept falling for the visitors as Sunil Ambris got hit wicket in his debut game. Wagner then had Roston Chase and Jason Holder dismissed off consecutive balls.
The West Indies innings was in shambles. From 75/1, they were reduced to 105/9. The tailenders Kemar Roach and Shannon Gabriel tried to prolong the last wicket stand. However, that didn’t last long as the West Indies were all out for a total of 134 runs on the board. Neil Wagner had fantastic bowling figures of 7/39. Trent Boult also got a couple of wickets.
The Kiwis were off to a good start. Openers Tom Latham and Jeet Raval combined for a 65 run partnership for the first wicket. While Latham and skipper Kane Williamson were dismissed in quick succession, the New Zealand managed to hold on unlike the West Indies today.
The hosts were 85/2 at stumps on Day 1. Both Kemar Roach and Jason Holder managed to get a wicket each. Twitterati was surprisingly up for the game. While West Indies got trolled brutally for their collapse, Neil Wagner was hailed for his seven-wicket haul.
Here are some of the amazing Twitter reactions from Day One of the first Test.
In NZ. Watching the West Indies put in a completely inept batting display. 134 all out. NZ already 50-0, and it’s still day one. Not a good test cricket advert so far #NZvWI

I don't understand why the Windies are bowling so short? The graph is higher than anything I've seen Australia have #NZvWI

From 0-59 to 9-105 this has been a spectacularly inept collapse by the West Indies, even by their standards. #nzvwi #cricket

That's a bizarre record for Ambris which seems unbeatable. First player ever to get hitwicket on debut in international cricket, is he? I've never heard of any at least in the modern era #NZvWI

Neil Wagner's 7/39 at Wellington today is the fifth best bowling performance in a Test innings in New Zealand and the best by any left arm bowler in New Zealand!#NZvWI

I was really looking forward to having cricket for background noise for the next three days at least… But Wagner thinks he’s in a T20. #NZvWI

Wagner's 7-39 the 2nd best figures by a seamer in the opening innings of a Test match in the last 20 years. Only Broad's 8-15 has been better.https://t.co/IxXnE3Dhxa #NZvWI

Career best figures of 7-39 for Neil Wagner ?
West Indies bowled out for 134 midway through the second session.

Today: West Indian Sunil Ambris became the 11th Test debutant to be dismissed 'hit-wicket'. But he is the first to be dismissed on a duck!#NZvWI

West Indies should have played with 8-9 bowlers.. that wouldn't have made any difference to their scorecard. #NZvWI
