Twitter Reactions: Neil Wagner runs riot over the Windies batting line up
Twitterati was surprisingly up for the game.
The first Test match between the Windies and New Zealand kicked off at Wellington. In a single day, we saw 12 wickets falling at the Basin Reserve. The Kiwis managed to have an upper hand as they sprung close to the deficit.
Earlier in the day, it was skipper Jason Holder who won the toss as West Indies elected to bat first. The Caribbeans went in with a fast bowling attack. As for the hosts, they had 4 pacers alongside Mitchell Santner.
Batting first, the Windies were off to a good start. Kraigg Brathwaite and Kieran Powell put up a 50 runs partnership for the first wicket. However, the turn that followed was quite unexpected. While Brathwaite got out soon, the West Indies faced an apocalypse after Powell’s wicket.
The duo of Shimron Hetmyer and Shai Hope were dismissed cheaply by Neil Wagner within the space of three balls. Wickets kept falling for the visitors as Sunil Ambris got hit wicket in his debut game. Wagner then had Roston Chase and Jason Holder dismissed off consecutive balls.
The West Indies innings was in shambles. From 75/1, they were reduced to 105/9. The tailenders Kemar Roach and Shannon Gabriel tried to prolong the last wicket stand. However, that didn’t last long as the West Indies were all out for a total of 134 runs on the board. Neil Wagner had fantastic bowling figures of 7/39. Trent Boult also got a couple of wickets.
The Kiwis were off to a good start. Openers Tom Latham and Jeet Raval combined for a 65 run partnership for the first wicket. While Latham and skipper Kane Williamson were dismissed in quick succession, the New Zealand managed to hold on unlike the West Indies today.
The hosts were 85/2 at stumps on Day 1. Both Kemar Roach and Jason Holder managed to get a wicket each. Twitterati was surprisingly up for the game. While West Indies got trolled brutally for their collapse, Neil Wagner was hailed for his seven-wicket haul.
