New Zealand would be fairly satisfied with the way they started their opening Test against Bangladesh at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui. On Day one of the encounter, the Black Caps scored 258 runs for the loss of five wickets on back of Devon Conway’s second ton in Test cricket. The Tigers, led by Mominul Haque, tried their hearts out and didn’t let their opponents run away with the game.

Young, Conway steady New Zealand’s ship

After electing to field first, Bangladesh made an incredible start as Shoriful Islam got rid of Kiwis stand-in skipper Tom Latham in the fourth over. Latham found an outside-edge after poking at a ball outside the off stump only for Liton Das to take a sharp diving catch. From there on, Devon Conway and Will Young took charge as they put on an important 138-run partnership for the second wicket.

Young was the more cautious of the two as he made 52 runs at a strike rate of 38.51. The Tigers separated the duo after a terrible mix-up between Conway and Young led to the latter’s dismissal. Young was run out at the striker’s end after being sent back by Conway. From there on, Conway and Ross Taylor, who put forth his decision to retire from the international level, put their heads down.

Bangladesh pick up late wickets

Taylor looked settled in his 31-run knock before he became Shoriful’s second victim. Later it was Tigers’ skipper Mominul, who gave his team the all-important wicket, getting rid of Conway, who made 122 with the help of 16 fours and one six. Conway came to bat in the fourth over and almost played throughout the day. The southpaw has made a brilliant start to his Test career, averaging 71.57.

Apart from two centuries, one of which was a double against England at the Lord’s, Conway has also scored two half-centuries. Henry Nicholls and Tom Blundell seemed like taking New Zealand to close of play without further loss of wickets. But Blundell chopped one on to his stumps off Ebadot Hossain. Nicholls, in the meantime, stood tall, staying unbeaten on 32 runs with five fours.
