The record partnership between Ross Taylor and Tom Latham ensured New Zealand a 6-wicket win over India in the first ODI in Mumbai. Kiwis chased down a competitive total of 281 and now lead the three-match series by 1-0. Indian bowlers tried their level best to pick the wickets but the duo didn’t give up right until the end and scripted a famous win for their side much to the disappointment of the Indian fans present in the Stadium.
The Men in Blue scalped early wickets and had reduced the visitors to 80/3 with the s[in twins to come. But Taylor and Latham rotated the strike wonderfully well and kept the tweakers out of the game. Surprisingly, Kohli didn’t have any answers to the rearguard action by the duo as India looked hapless in the back end of the innings. Tom Latham who was moved down the order to bring the solidity to the line-up performed his job perfectly and scored a century.
Kohli century in vain
After opting to bat first, Trent Boult rocked the hosts early by snaffling the openers, Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan. However, Virat Kohli once again came to the fore of the Indian side and led the side from the front. He shepherded the Indian innings beautifully when others struggled remarkably. In the process, he brought up his 31st century and helped the Men in Blue post a more than competitive total on the board.
Though Boult was exceptional and kept the batsmen quiet in the death as well to return with the match-winning figures of 4/35. He was very well assisted by Tim Southee and the left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner who scalped 4 wickets between them. But the experienced batsmen Latham and Taylor added a record 200 runs for the fourth wicket and took their team ahead in a crucial 3-match series.
Twitterati erupted much to the joy of the Kiwis and applauded the effort of the Kiwi batsmen who played their hearts out and led their team to a famous win. Very few had given them a chance going into the series and they have silenced their critics. Now they would love to seal the series by winning the second match in Pune itself.
Here’s how Twitterati hailed Latham and Taylor for magnificent knocks:
