West Indies won the third T2oI match against Bangladesh by five wickets to register a 2-0 series win at Providence Stadium in Guyana on Thursday. Nicholas Pooran played a brilliant knock of unbeaten 74 runs off just 39 balls to win his first home series as a skipper. Opener Kyle Mayers also smashed his first-ever T20I fifty to contribute to the win.

Bangladesh skipper Mahmudullah won the toss and chose to bat first. The hosts made one change to their starting eleven with Dominic Drakes coming in for Keemo Paul. For the visitors, left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed replaced Taskin Ahmed. Bangladesh openers Litton Das and Anamul Haque started well and put up a 35-run partnership for the first wicket. Odean Smith dismissed Haque in the fifth over on a short ball, which took a thick edge and landed in the safe hands of Akeal Hosein at third man.

The in-form batter Shakib Al Hasan came in at number three and smashed four on the first ball. He went for another big hit in the next over on Romario Shepherd’s short ball and was caught at mid-wicket for just five runs. Then Afif Hossain came in and formed a crucial partnership of 57 runs with Litton for the third wicket. Hayden Walsh dismissed the latter on 49 runs to give the home side a big break.

Captain Mahamudullah then did well to stitch a good stand with Afif. Walsh dismissed the skipper on 22 runs in the 19th over and Hossain also departed soon after reaching 50 due to an unfortunate run-out in the same over. Mosaddek Hossain smashed two fours in the last over to put a good total of 163/5 on the scoreboard.

West Indies chased the target with 10 balls left

Brandon King, who scored fifty in the last match, started West Indies’ innings by smashing a big six on the second delivery. But he was caught out by Mahmudullah on Nasum’s delivery on the last ball of the first over. West Indies also lost Shamarh Brooks in the powerplay overs, who scored 12 runs off 12 balls. Shakib then sent back Odean Smith on just two runs and the hosts were struggling at 47/3 after the 7th over.

But Pooran and Mayers steadied the innings and built up an 85-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Mayers registered his first maiden T20I fifty off just 33 balls by smashing a six to Mosaddek in the 14th over. Pooran smashed Nasum for 17 runs in the next over to complete his fifty in just 31 balls. West Indies lost Mayers on 55 runs in the same over but they needed just 24 runs from the last five overs.

Hosein took a single against Mahmudullah to level the score on the first ball of the 19th over. And Pooran finished the chase by hitting another six on the next ball. West Indies clinched the series by 2-0 after the rain washed out the first match. Now both West Indies and Bangladesh will clash against each other in the three-match ODI series starting on the 10th of July at the Providence Stadium in Guyana.
