Pakistan were one of the earliest teams to reach England for the World Cup and had the necessary practice. They also had the advantage of changing a few players after seeing them not performing well enough. Old warhorses like Mohammad Amir and Wahab Riaz were brought back. However, the team lost even against Afghanistan in the warm-up games, extending their losing streak to 11 in 12 games.
Pakistan batting collapses like a pack of cards
On Friday, Pakistan faced the Windies in their first game of the World Cup at Trent Bridge and their batting was a disaster. Caribbean skipper Jason Holder won the toss and invited Sarfaraz Ahmed’s side to bat first. They were 35 for 1 at one stage but slumped to 83 for 9 in less than 20 overs.
It was the final duo of Wahab Riaz and Mohammad Amir who took the score past the three-figure mark. Pakistan were all out for a paltry 105 in less than 22 overs. Opener Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam top scored with 22 while rest was all ruins. The Caribbeans’ five-pronged pace attack was too much for the Pakistan side to handle. Youngster Oshane Thomas took four while captain Holder taking three wickets. Andre Russell claimed two scalps.
Pakistan’s lackluster performance with the bat left the fans utterly disappointed. The team still had some high scores in the series versus England while it was the bowlers who leaked runs. But when it came to the big event, Pakistan’s batters let them down pathetically.
Pakistan had won the title last time a major tournament was organized in England – the Champions Trophy in 2017. The team was being hailed as unpredictable even though they had their share of problems. But after the show in their first match, Sarfaraz Ahmed’s side will have to do some serious soul-searching to bounce back.
Pakistan next play England at Trent Bridge on June 3. The hosts defeated South Africa by 104 runs in the first match at the Oval on Thursday to have a flying start in the tournament. Ben Stokes’ all-round efforts helped the hosts bury the Proteas.
Here are some of the reactions on Twitter following Pakistan’s horrendous batting display
