The first day of the third Test between South Africa and Australia was no less than a drama as the fans witnessed an attritional cricket. While it was Dean Elgar who ruled the most part of the day before the other batsmen in the line-up collapsed haplessly in the final session. Pat Cummins led the comeback for Australia as they stormed back in the game after looking absolutely clueless during the second session. However, Twitterati blamed the home side for choking again and hailed Australia for bowling well once again.
Earlier in the day, South Africa won the toss and opted to bat first as the openers Aiden Markram and Elgar strode out to the middle. But the former was sent back soon on a duck by Josh Hazlewood to give the visitors a perfect start. Though after the early blow, Elgar and Hashim Amla played gamely and denied any more hiccups until lunch. Amla looked in good nick and was prepared for the test against the best bowling attack of the world.
Elgar heroics
Soon after the lunch, Amla was dismissed once again by Hazlewood which brought the in-form AB de Villiers in the middle. Both Elgar and De Villiers added 128 runs for the third wicket as the former smashed a century. He soaked in all the applause fom the crowd and deserved all the praise coming towards him. However, soon after the milestone, it was a tough going from the rainbow nation as De Villiers chipped a delivery from Cummins straight to mid-on on 64.
The infamous collapse
The wicket triggered the infamous collapse for South Africa once again as the middle order crumbled big time. Cummins was excellent in his spell as the ball reversed ands he further scalped the wickets of Temba Bavuma and Quinton de Kock. Elgar meanwhile, was solid throughout despite all the happenings at the other end. Eventually, South Africa posted 266 runs for the loss of 8 wickets until stumps on the first day of the Test match.
Twitter was extremely disappointed with them as they anticipated a much better day for them on a batting pitch.
Here’s how they reacted:
