On the back of Pathum Nissanka’s spectacular hundred, the home side Sri Lanka managed to beat Australia in the Player of the Match for his excellent knock against the Men in Yellow. The home side has now won two matches in a row in the ODI series and earned a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. They will now be backing themselves to win bag the series in the next match.
Meanwhile, Australia after winning the toss decided to have a bat first at a batting track in Colombo. David Warner’s poor form in the ODI series continued as he could only manage nine runs. All-rounder Mitchell Marsh was also dismissed for 10. Skipper Aaron Finch along with Marnus Labuschagne stitched a valuable partnership for the visitors. However, Labuschagne (29 runs) was scalped soon after Australia crossed the 100-run mark.
Skipper Finch departed just five runs after Labuschagne went. However, an excellent display of batting from Alex Carey (49 runs), Travis Head (70*), and Glenn Maxwell (33 runs) ensured that the visitors scored 291/6 in their allotted 50 overs. For Sri Lanka, Dushmantha Chameera (one), Dunith Wellalage (one), Jeffrey Vandersay (three), and Dhananjaya de Silva (one) were the wicket-takers.
Sri Lanka made a mockery of Australia total and chased down the target easily
In reply, Sri Lanka never looked in trouble. Openers Niroshan Dickwella (25) and Nissanka (137) gave a decent start to their team. After the fall of Dickwella, Kusal Mendis (87) and Nissanka commanded the game till Lanka reached near the 200-run landmark. However, Mendis got retired after facing some difficulties in batting. De Silva made a vital contribution of 25 runs in just 17 balls. However, he was scalped by Josh Hazlewood.
The remaining part of the chase was done by Charith Asalanka (13) and Nissanka , who walked back unbeaten at 137. For Australia, Hazlewood (one), Jhye Richardson (two), and Maxwell (one) were the successful bowlers as the mighty Australian side was blown away by Nissanka’s brilliance with the bat.
Meanwhile, let’s look at how Twitter reacted to Sri Lanka’s triumph:
