The Delhi Capitals decimated Kolkata Knight Riders on the back of Prithvi Shaw’s blitzkrieg 41-ball 82, featuring 11 fours and three sixes. Set 155 for the chase, he added 132 off just 87 deliveries with Shikhar Dhawan before a mild hiccup delayed the inevitable victory.

Calling correctly at the toss, Rishabh Pant put in Kolkata Knight Riders, eyeing to make use of the dew later on. Struggling to come to terms with a two-paced track, Eoin Morgan’s men were accelerated past the 150-mark by Andre Russell’s late onslaught (45 off 27) after none of the other batters managed to score runs freely. Shubman Gill snapped his low-scoring streak but with a sedate 43 that took him 38 balls.

Gill plays anchor

Even as the Riders had a better powerplay return, their opening woes continued. Nitish Rana looked at ease in a short 12-ball 15 stay, which included a magnificent reverse-sweep for six against Axar Patel over backward point. However, dancing down the track on the next ball and making no connection meant he was stumped by a lightening quick Pant behind.

Rahul Tripathi and Gill added runs steadily but they were never able to intimidate the bowlers with their hitting, allowing them to pounce over and built constant pressure. Tripathi (19 off 17) seemed content milking singles even though Gill at the other end was unable to get his timing right. Tripathi got a four off Stoinis, only his second, before finding Lalit Yadav in the deep on the next ball.

Birthday boy Russ shines

Yadav, Amit Mishra’s replacement, struck twice in the 11th over to severely thwart any chances for KKR acceleration, dismissing both Eoin Morgan and Sunil Narine for ducks. Morgan was undone by a blinder from Steve Smith at long-off, while Narine was castled and knocked over only two balls later.

Smith was in action again soon as Gill deposited Avesh Khan’s slower one straight into his hands. From there, it came down to Andre Russell, the birthday boy, who had an innings of two halves: first 18 balls, 16 runs, and only a six, but it was the next nine that got him 29, including three sixes and two fours. The team’s other finisher, Dinesh Karthik, could manage only 14 from 10 before Axar Patel pinned him lbw, but 31 runs off the last two overs ensured that Morgan’s men had a competitive score on the board.

‘Shaw’stopper Prithvi in cruise control

The Capitals scored nearly 17% of their target in the first over off Shivam Mavi that read: Wide, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4.

Picking six fours on the trot, Shaw unfurled one beautiful shot after another against an erring Mavi, as he became only the second batsman – after Ajinkya Rahane – to achieve the feat in the league’s history. Despite a one-run over from Pat Cummins, the Capitals’ tally read 67/0 by the end of the powerplay.

Shaw flicked Cummins behind square for another four to notch up an 18-ball 50, with his partner, Shikhar Dhawan, contently playing a second fiddle. Such was the insane hitting of Shaw that the equation came down to run-a-ball 60 at the halfway mark. The opening partnership continued to make merry, with Dhawan cutting Chakravarthy for a boundary and freeing himself up. The 132-run stand finally ended with Cummins pinning Dhawan lbw for a 47-ball 46.

The hopes of Shaw’s century came to end with Rishabh Pant smashing a four and six off Krishna, and an attempt to finish things off quickly led them to lose a couple of wickets: Shaw top-edged Cummins to point, while Pant holed out to Mavi at long-on before Marcus Stoinis hit the winning four to take his team home with 7 wickets in hands and 21 balls to spare.
