South Africa started their campaign with a defeat against Australia on October 23, but have made an incredible comeback, winning three games on the trot. On Tuesday, November 2, they defeated Mahmudullah’s Bangladesh by six wickets at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. As far as the Tigers are concerned, they lost their fourth match and have been knocked out of the competition.
Rabada, Nortje break Bangladesh’s backbone
The Tigers’ lineup was severely depleted after Mohammad Saifuddin and Shakib Al Hasan were ruled out due to injuries. The fact that Mustafizur Rahman didn’t play the game against the Proteas weakened them even more. After being put in to bat first, Bangladesh could never get going as they were shot out for 84 in 18.2 overs. Barring Liton Das and Mahedi Hasan, none of their batters could show resistance.
Even as Liton scored 24, Mahedi played a 27-run cameo down the order. Soumya Sarkar, Mushfiqur Rahim and Afif Hossain Dhrubo failed to open their account. Skipper Mahmudullah couldn’t make an impact either. For South Africa, Anrich Nortje and Kagiso Rabada picked up three wickets apiece. Tabraiz Shamsi also got two wickets. Keshav Maharaj was frugal, but failed to make a breakthrough.
South Africa get home comfortably
Defending the modest score, Bangladesh made a great start as Taskin Ahmed trapped Reeza Hendricks plumb in front. Quinton de Kock hit three fours on his way to 16 before Mahedi rattled his woodwork. Aiden Markram, who’s been in stupendous form of late, fetched a duck after Taskin found his outside edge. South Africa were steady at the start after scoring 33 runs in the powerplay.
Despite the fall of wickets, the pressure was never on the Proteas due to the low required rate. Rassie van der Dussen and Temba Bavuma put on 47 for the fourth wicket to put their team in command. Nasum Ahmed separated the duo, getting rid of van der Dussen, who made 22. Bavuma, at the other end, looked assured and the skipper stayed unbeaten on 31 runs off 28 balls with the help of three fours and a six.

Top spell from Taskin Ahmed. 2/18 from 4 overs. Says a lot about a man who had to build back his career, unlike some who get a free pass all the time.

worryingly for South Africa if they keep playing this well, they will find themselves in a knockout game #SAvBAN #T20WorldCup

#Bangladesh has hit five sixes across 75 overs in the Super 12 phase. That is one six fewer than what Jos Buttler hit in just yesterday's knock alone.#SAvBAN #T20WorldCup
