It was time for the start of Day 2 of the first Test match between West Indies and Sri Lanka. While the hosts had taken a lead on the first day, it was going to be interesting to see if the visitors could stage a comeback. They needed to bowl really well in order to keep the Caribbean side below 200 runs.

They got off to a good start with the ball as they dismissed the opponent captain Kraigg Brathwaite for a score of only three runs. John Campbell on the other hand held one side firmly and played a solid knock of 42 runs off 148 balls. He was involved in a 56-run partnership with Nkrumah Bonner to help their side recover from the loss of an early wicket.

However, none of the batsmen were able to convert their starts and were dismissed in quick succession. Kyle Mayers, who came in at number four, played an attacking knock to score 45 runs in 70 balls. His inning included six boundaries and two sixes.

Rahkeem Cornwall helps West Indies secure a lead of 99 runs

Just when it looked like the West Indian team was in control, they ended up losing wickets in a cluster. A score of 171/7 meant that the Sri Lankan side was definitely back in the game. If they could wrap up the batting side before 200 runs it would have been a massive victory for them. However, Joshua Da Silva and Rahkeem Cornwall had other plans.

De Silva played a good knock of 46 runs before being dismissed by Dushmantha Chameera. He formed a partnership of 90 runs with Cornwall who was in brilliant form. The big West Indian showed his ability with the bat by scoring an unbeaten 60 off just 79 balls. His knock included as many as nine boundaries and two sixes. His counterattack pushed the Asian side on the back foot once again.

For Sri Lanka, it was a say they could have really capitalized on. While the Caribbean side finished with 268/8 on Day 2 they could have probably been bundled down for a lot lower. Suranga Lakmal starred with the ball as he secured a fifer conceding just 45 runs in the 24 overs that he bowled.

A 99-run lead on Day 2 means the West Indies side are well ahead in the game. A good batting display by Sri Lanka in their next inning with the bat is their only way to make a comeback in this game.
