The Sylhet Sixers’ campaign went from bad to worse as they lost to Rangpur Riders at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium by four wickets. Moreover, the franchise also couldn’t give David Warner a winning-farewell. Warner won’t be a part of this BPL and would be returning to Australia. The Riders, with the victory, ceased their three-match losing streak in this year’s Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).

Sabbir impresses with the bat

Rangpur Riders opted to bowl first after winning the toss and the decision boomeranged on them as the Sixers amassed a significant 194 runs in 20 overs. Mashrafe Mortaza accounted for the wicket of Lion Das in the second over. Afif Hossain found the boundaries a few times, but Rilee Rossouw ran him out. Thereafter, it was the turn of opening batsman Sabbir Rahman to show his class with the willow in hand.

Along with skipper Warner, he put on a stand of 51 runs from 40 deliveries. Warner was shoddy and could only score 19 from 21 balls before being dismissed by Mortaza, the opposition skipper. Meanwhile, Sabbir carried on and racked up 85 runs from 51 balls with the help of five boundaries and six sixes. Left-handed Nicholas Pooran chipped in with a breezy 27-ball 47 to propel the Sixers’ score.

Rossouw steps up yet again

Rangpur got off to the worst possible start as Mohammad Irfan got rid of the hulk-like Chris Gayle in the very first over. Nevertheless, Alex Hales and Rossouw cobbled together a partnership of 63 from 33 balls to inject momentum into the innings. Part-timer Alok Kapali removed Hales for 33 to break the ominous-looking stand. AB de Villiers, who played his maiden BPL encounter, joined Rossouw in the middle.

Rossouw notched 61 runs from 35 balls with nine fours and two sixes. He also stitched together a stand of 67 with De Villiers and perished to Taskin Ahmed. In the same over, De Villiers fell prey to Taskin after scoring 34 runs. In the last two overs, the Riders needed 24 runs and Farhad Reza and Mortaza scored 19 runs off the 19th over by Mehedi Hasan Rana to virtually drill the final nail in the Sixers’ coffin.
