After a lot of speculation, the BCCI finally announced that Ravi Shastri will be the head coach of India until the 2019 World Cup. He was said to be the frontrunner for the position although Virender Sehwag and Tom Moody offered stiff competition. The former India captain was the director of the team for two years between 2014 and 2016.
Shastri along with five other candidates was interviewed by Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, who all are a part of the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC). The CAC wanted to buy time before making the official announcement as they wanted to consult skipper Virat Kohli to avoid another confrontation between the coach and the captain. It is no secret that Shastri is liked by all the members of the Indian Team and hence he was the anonymous choice.
The 55-year old had lost the battle with Anil Kumble last year and was left disappointed by not getting the job as he had shown decent results during his tenure. He even had a slight tussle with Sourav Ganguly at that time. Shastri put his name in the ring just when Kumble stepped down from his position.
The first assignment of the new coach will be the tour of Sri Lanka, where they will play 3 Tests, 5 ODIs and a T20 international. After that tour, India will host Australia for a limited overs series. If the government permits, the BCCI might host arch-rivals Pakistan in a full-fledged series later during the year. India are set to travel to South Africa in January for 4 Tests, 5 ODIs and 2 T20s early next year. These are the imminent challenges ahead of Shastri. He will have to prove his worth when India plays away from the sub-continent, an area where India hasn’t done well at all in the last five years.
Captain Kohli and Shastri share mutual respect for one another. With the Kumble saga behind the Indian team, the two must concentrate on working together and producing great results for Indian cricket.
Here are the best tweets of Shastri’s appointment:
