Ravindra Jadeja missed his maiden Test match century by just ten runs after entertaining the Mohali crowd with his counter-attacking show of batting. Jadeja only had two previous fifties in Test cricket – one against England at Lord’s in 2014, which helped build a match-winning lead, and the second against New Zealand in the previous series.

Jaddu played in his natural skin, trying attack whenever possible while accumulating singles to build the lead for his team. His knock not only is special because it helped him to better a personal achievement, but, from the team’s perspective also. Jaddu played two roles during his knock spanned over 170 balls studded with 10 fours and 1 six. He began as a catalyst to Ashwin and later lead from the front with Jayant Yadav, knitting two crucial stands for India.

After experiencing a mini collapse in the last session where the batting lost three wickets short successions, Ravichandran Ashwin took the lead and along with Ravindra Jadeja took India close to England’s first inning total before eventually overhauling it in the morning session on day three.

Ashwin departed shortly into the first day but Jadeja continued from where Ashwin left and by lunch had already reached his career best score, ending at 72* at the break. While his stand of 97 runs for the most crucial one, his 80 runs partnership with Jayant Yadav can be termed match defining. This was also the first time he had faced more than 100 deliveries in a Test innings. Jadeja carried on the good work and registered his third Test fifty and celebrated the feat by performing an impromptu sword-dance with his bat.
