Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) lost three matches in a row and slipped to the sixth position of the points table in this edition’s Indian Premier League (IPL). In the end, it was the Challengers, who came out trumps at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium by 10 runs. The Knights’ very own Andre Russell’s 25-ball 65 with nine sixes went in vain as KKR kept languishing at the bottom half.

Virat takes charge

The Knight Riders won the toss and elected to field first. Parthiv Patel started with a couple of fours, but Sunil Narine nipped him out in the fourth over for a run-a-ball 11. Akshdeep Nath was promoted up the order and he got out to Andre Russell. The KKR bowlers did decently and restricted the visitors to 59 for two in the ninth over. Thereafter, Virat Kohli and Moeen Ali put on a stand of 90 runs off 41 deliveries.

Moeen got to his half-century in 24 balls and he got out to Kuldeep Yadav after notching 66 from 28 with five fours and six over-boundaries. Nevertheless, Virat didn’t stop and even he accomplished his fifty in 40 balls. The RCB captain then went berserk and brought up his century in a mere 57 balls. Even Marcus Stoinis ended with an 8-ball 17. The Challengers went on to score 213 for four in 20 overs.

KKR couldn’t get home

The Knights got off to a horrendous start as Dale Steyn, playing his first game this season, accounted for Chris Lynn’s wicket in the very first over. Lynn got a lifeline courtesy of a dropped catch from Stoinis, but couldn’t make amends. The South African then sent Shubman Gill packing. Narine threatened with a 16-ball 18 and he gave his wicket away to Navdeep Saini. Robin Uthappa and Rana added 46 runs then.

Stoinis dismissed Uthappa, who was going nowhere. With 135 runs needed from 49 balls, Andre Russell took the field. He smashed Yuzvendra Chahal for three sixes in a row to keep KKR in the hunt. Rana broke free and scored a fifty in 34 balls. KKR had over 60 runs in the last three overs. Rana came to the party and reduced the target to 43 from the last two overs.

It was all up to the hulk-like Andre to pull off a miraculous chase. In the last over, KKR needed 24 runs and in the last four balls, 22. Russell cleared the boundary once, but couldn’t chase the target down, much to KKR’s agony. Rana remained not out on 85 from 46 with nine fours and five sixes.
