Cheteshwar Pujara has stood defiantly between Australia and victory in this series so far. India’s number three has once again proved his mettle playing a sensational knock to keep India ahead on a lovely opening day at the Sydney Cricket Ground in the fourth Test. Pujara once again had to weather the storm with the returning KL Rahul‘s woeful run of form.

He was dismissed for the fourth time in this series by Josh Hazlewood only to bring Pujara in the middle in the second over of the day. The confident batsman might have got used to it as he didn’t look disturbed at all. There was assistance for the pace bowlers but it was nothing new for him. Pujara first got his eye in while also punishing the deliveries which provided width time and again.

As soon as he started to milk the runs, the frustration was visible in the Australian bowlers’ body language. He continued to play patiently and didn’t alter his game even a wee bit despite it being a batting pitch. Though there was a hint of uneven bounce India’s second wall literally didn’t have anything to do with it.

Mayank Agarwal also played nicely in the first session as the duo survived the short-ball barrage in the second hour also copping serious blow on their helmets. But the start of the second session saw both of them shifting gears and taking on the short ball. Cheteshwar Pujara switched into the defensive mode at times to keep the bowlers guessing.

However, Agarwal’s wicket and then Virat Kohli‘s did put pressure on him but his footwork against both spinners and pacers was so sublime, that it never seemed that he was in trouble. Australia bowled really well in the third session but the 30-year-old was superb in his game and didn’t give any chance to the opposition.

Once again, Pujara, like in Adelaide, raced from 80 to 100 and the milestone was brought up with an exceptional flick through the leg-side. There was a pump-fist in celebration as he soaked in all the applause from the crowd for his third century of the series. Pujara is looking good for a big knock in Sydney and will need decent support from the other end.

Here’s how Twitter reacted to his brilliant century:
