Twitter Reactions: Rishabh Pant set to travel to West Indies
Pant has been rewarded for his good showings at the domestic level with a national call-up.
Rishabh Pant is widely tipped as the one for the future. The Delhi boy has impressed everyone with his attacking game and showed great mental strength to play the IPL despite losing his father a day prior to the start of the tournament. The 19-year old finally gets an opportunity to showcase his talent at the international level as he has been included in the squad to travel to West Indies after the conclusion of the Champions Trophy.
Pant had a breakthrough Ranji Trophy season for Delhi as he went on to amass 972 runs in 12 innings at 81 which also included a magnificent counter-attacking 308. His strike rate for the season was a mammoth 107. He kept the form going in the IPL, where he plays for Delhi Daredevils. In 14 games, the southpaw scored 366 runs at a strike rate 151. The standout innings was his 97 that came off just 43 balls against the Gujarat Lions. Such was the magnitude of the knock that it even got someone like Sachin Tendulkar excited.
When the five wise men sat down to pick the team for the Champions Trophy, Pant’s name was discussed. He was eventually picked as one of the five standbys for the tournament. With the West Indies series announced a few days ago, Pant was finally picked in the team as they decided to rest Rohit Sharma. Pant had done enough to warrant a place in the Indian side with consistent performances at the domestic and IPL level.
India will play 5 ODIS and a T20 international in the Caribbean starting on June 23. The selectors also decided to rest Jasprit Bumrah and include Kuldeep Yadav in the squad as well. This is a perfect opportunity for someone like Rishabh Pant to prove his credentials. He will an understudy to MS Dhoni on the tour but might get a chance as a pure batsman. Pant must look to play his natural game and not get bogged down by the occasion. He has been looked at someone who can fill in the boots of Dhoni when the legend walks into retirement later. This could be a good head start at the international level.
