Twitter Reactions: Rishabh Pant's crazy 146 complemented well by Ravindra Jadeja make it India's day at Edgbaston
Rishabh Pant scored 146 runs from 111 deliveries on the first day of the Edgbaston Test.
The first day of the rescheduled fifth Test match between England and India at Edgbaston saw the hosts begin on a brilliant note and the visitors ending with a brave effort as both teams battle it out with the series on the line. Meanwhile, it was youngster Rishabh Pant who was the showstopper as he registered his second overseas century this year that also saw head coach Rahul Dravid giving him a standing ovation.
England bowlers wreaked havoc after skipper Ben Stokes called it right at the toss and at one point had India on the mat with hardly anything on the board. Veteran pacer James Anderson and emerging bowler Matthew Potts ran through the famed Indian batting lineup before the middle-order duo of Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja’s onslaught made them run out of fire and brimstone.
Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja’s onslaught leaves England shell-shocked
The seasoned top-order of India comprising Cheteshwar Pujara and batting megastar Virat Kohli disappointed on the big occasion yet again as they went back to the pavilion scoring just 13 and 11 runs against their names respectively and when Shreyas Iyer was sent back courtesy of a blinder from wicketkeeper Sam Billings, the visitors were tottering at 98/5.
When a batting collapse seemed to be on the cards for India, the rock-solid middle-order duo of Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja made their presence felt by staging a counter-attack that left the English bowling attack clueless. Both did not fear cutting loose and successfully kept the scoreboard ticking as the Indian dressing room and fans heaved a sigh of relief.
Pant was at his aggressive best as England bowlers had no answers for his carnage and the youngster eventually went on to breach the three-figure mark off just 89 deliveries. He did not slow down after reaching his century and continued to go berserk. Jadeja, on the other hand, played a great second fiddle as he went on to register a vital half-century.
It took part-timer Joe Root to get rid of Rishabh Pant in the 67th over, but not before he scored a blistering 146 from 111 deliveries at a strike rate of 131.5 and his knock included 19 fours and four sixes. More importantly from a team perspective, Pant and Jadeja were involved in a 222-run stand for the sixth wicket.
Captain Ben Stokes then accounted for bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur cheaply, but Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami then ensured that the visitors suffered no further hiccups to end the day at 338/7 with the former remaining unbeaten on 83.
