Wow! The match seemed done and dusted for Rajasthan Royals (RR) after Sanju Samson got out in the 12th over of the chase. But then two of India’s uncapped players, Rahul Tewatia and Riyan Parag had different ideas. They left the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) stunned and pulled off a heist proving their mettle yet again chasing down 159 runs in the last over thriller.
Earlier, David Warner led the team from the front with a 48-run knock holding one end until the 15th over of the innings. He was well supported by Manish Pandey as they added 73 runs for the second wicket. The duo didn’t play any rash shot as the pitch was getting slower with every passing over. The Royals bowled well too making it tough for the batsmen to score big shots.
After Warner’s dismissal, Pandey took control of the innings ad played some delightful strokes. In the process, he also got to his half-century. However, just when SRH needed Pandey to go berserk, he got out after mustering 54 off 44 balls. At 122/3 in the 18th over, one felt as if the Orange Army miscalculated their innings and were a bit too defensive. Even RR bowled well at that stage only to blow away all the hard work done in the innings.
Kane Williamson was at the forefront of the attack at the death as he smashed Archer for two massive sixes in the 19th over. Even Priyam Garg hit a couple of lusty blows to take the team to 158 runs which looked far fetched after Pandey got out.
The Thrilling Chase
The Royals were bolstered with Ben Stokes’ return to the line-up and surprisingly, he was sent to open the innings alongside Jos Buttler. But the move failed miserably with Khaleel Ahmed castling the left-hander in the second over itself. Steve Smith’s poor run continued as he got run-out before Khaleel got the better of Buttler to leave RR reeling at 26/3 in the powerplay.
Robin Uthappa and Sanju Samson then stitched 37 runs together to keep the team in the hunt. But Rashid Khan weaved his magic to pin the former in front of the stumps while even Samson got out to the same bowler selling the team into river at 78/5. Riyan Parag and Rahul Tewatia then spent some time at the crease to get the hold of the conditions.
The duo rotated the strike until the end of 16th over and then Tewatia displayed his magic with the bat against the best opposition bowler Rashid Khan. The left-hander stunned the Afghan leggie to hit him for two fours off reverse sweeps and then slammed one over extra covers to churn out 14 runs from the crucial over. Earlier, Sandeep Sharma had conceded 18 runs in the 17th over and the equation had now come down to 22 runs off the last two overs.
This is when SRH missed their ace pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The penultimate over was given to T Natarajan and Tewatia’s good touch with the bat continued as the southpaw hit two fours and a six to bring it down to 8 off the final over. Khaleel Ahmed was given the responsibility but Parag and Tewatia were too good on the day as they heroically got the Royals over the line with a stunning partnership of 85* for the sixth wicket.

When they buy a marquee player, franchises hope for 3 or 4 match-winning performances. In a team with four superstars, Rahul Tewatia, bought for 30 lakh, has already won Rajasthan two games #SRHvRR

There was some heat between Rahul Tewatia and Khaleel Ahmed in the final over, David Warner straight after the match came towards Tewatia and had words with him. Amazing from Warner to sort small issues out right there. pic.twitter.com/J1j6gSsWIu
