Twitter Reactions: Rohit Sharma brings up a brilliant century at Chepauk
After scoring his fifty in just 47 deliveries, Rohit Sharma reached his century off 130 deliveries in the second Test.
Rohit Sharma, on Saturday, finally ended his century drought in Tests when he reached the three-figure mark in the ongoing second Test against England in Chennai. The right-handed batsman had not scored a century since his 212-run knock against South Africa in October 2019. It was the very series where he was promoted as an opener in Tests for the first time.
After that double century, he played five Tests without scoring a century. With the likes of Prithvi Shaw, Mayank Agarwal, and KL Rahul waiting in the wings, the pressure was building on the right-handed batsman. But on Saturday, he relieved the pressure off himself by scoring his seventh hundred in the longest format of the game.
Cheered on by his wife Ritika and the crowd, Rohit looked like a man on a mission right from the start after Virat Kohli won the toss and decided to bat first. On an unpredictable pitch that was offering occasional uneven bounce and sharp turn, Rohit showed his class. While the likes of Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, and Virat Kohli failed to deliver, the opening batsman played a sublime knock to keep India in the hunt for a good score.
Rohit did not shy away from playing his shots right from the word go and reached his fifty off just 47 deliveries. On the other end of the wicket, India lost three quick wickets inside the first session. Gill was the first to depart when Olly Stone sent him back even before he could open his account. It was followed by an 85-run stand between Rohit and Pujara before England dismissed the latter and Kohli in quick succession to reduce India to 86 for 3.
Twitter praises Rohit Sharma for a century
The fall of wickets at the other end did not affect Rohit Sharma much as he kept playing the cracking shots. By the time the lunch was taken, India had raced away to 106 with Rohit scoring 80 of those runs. The right-handed batsman finally reached his hundred off 130 balls in the 42nd over with a double off Moeen Ali. His innings included 14 fours and two sixes at that stage.
India would be hoping that their star man builds on the century and score big to power them to a big score. Meanwhile, the cricket fraternity was quick to lavish praise on Rohit for his stunning century on the difficult track.
